Grandchildren

If you have grandchildren, do you miss them when they are away?  Do they live far away?  Our two youngest grands were in Germany for a vacation in late June.  They had a wonderful time and shared lovely photos with us yesterday.  Upon their return one was sick and therefore we had not seen them for about a month.  That's too long for this grandmother!  Our eldest grandson, that lives with us now while attending school, lived in New Hampshire.  That was a challenge for me.  We made a point of travelling to see him at least once a quarter.

The grands are staying with us for a few days.  It has been so hot and humid the last few days we are limited to early morning bocce games.

They love to go to the school playground at the school that their Dad and Aunt attended.  We all walked over for them to play and watched the antics of our monkeys.

Miles is known as the butterfly whisperer in our family.  He loves nature and is able to have butterflies light on his hand.  He doesn't hurt them.  I think it helps that he has lemonade juice on his hands!

Grayden made this German checkers game before we were married and the boys enjoyed playing with this simple game.

We grilled hamburgers, had ice cream, made microwaved s'mores (too hot to make fire in chimnea), played games, and just enjoyed ourselves.  We are so blessed to have grandchildren!

  1. It looks like a real special time with those special boys. It's nice they could go and relive history so-to-speak, at their dad's school and old playground. I need to go back and read your England trip post.

    1. Dotsie, the playground at my children's school was quite different when they attended there. It was during the days when folks seemed afraid to allow schools to have playground equipment. If I remember correctly it had something to do with insurance and the school. Times have changed and they have wonderful equipment now. ♥

  2. What a lovely family time!
Now, question ~ do you know the board game Ludo? Grayden's German Checkers looks very much like my old Ludo board! Four counters, start in a corner, work your way around to 'home' and the first to move all four counters wins ~ after negotiating the board and being 'knocked back' by an opponent's counter landing on the same square as you. I'll be interested to know!

    1. Deb, we looked up your game of Ludo--yes it is played just like we play German Checkers. We also looked up German Checkers and didn't find it like Grayden made. He played this game with a friend as a youngster and that's what they called it. So he made one for himself. Whatever the game is, we enjoyed it! ♥

    1. Cheryl, the boys are growing up so quickly. Seems much faster than my own two children. Yes indeed...grab the moments! ♥

  4. Your two youngest are just a few years older than mine. They brought a big grin to my face. We love Bocce! Our game was made in Maine...is yours perchance? My grandfather used to make board games for my sister and me. He called one similar to yours "Aggravation." We still enjoy playing it. My grands live less than a mile away...over the river and on the other side of the tracks. Ha! Still, would you believe that we go weeks without seeing each other? Crazy. My limit is a month...I must see them at least monthly.

    1. Vee, we just checked the box and our Bocce was made in Wilton, Maine! I hadn't noticed that.
We love Bocce too--so much fun. That's neat your grandfather made board games--do you have any of them? I guess because we don't live close to our grands (about 50 miles) I feel a need to visit often. Of course I want to see my son, also! ♥

  5. Grayden looks like the perfect granddaddy for boys! I look forward to when we have several grandchildren. We are grateful that our 3 boys live in the area so that the future cousins can be close. For you to make that long trip to NH four times a year shows just how devoted you are. That's truly wonderful.

    1. Cathy, Grayden is a wonderful granddaddy! He's a big ole teddy bear for the boys to play with! He can be stern when it's needed. I think I've mentioned his grandfather name is Bear. It's perfect for him. Our grandchildren and children mean the world to us. ♥

  6. What fun family times, Martha Ellen! I can see how much your grandsons have grown just since you have been writing your blog. How did they like their visit to Germany? I have dear friends near the Black Forest, and have visited Germany many times. Although I don't have any children or grandchildren, I taught soooooo long that was lucky to have two 'grand students!' That was a real treat! I know your grandsons are having as much fun as you are! ♡Dawn@Petals.Paper.SimpleThymes

  7. Dawn, the grands have grown several inches the past few months. They visited Bavaria and the Austrian Alps while on vacation. The children loved it. Miles told me things don't look that different from home. I'm glad he realizes that in this world we are more alike than different. Germany was home to their great grandparents on their mother's side. What a special teacher you are to have had 'grand students'. I can imagine the influence you must have had on them. Take care and stay cool! ♥

  8. You truly are blessed to have grandchildren, and living so close too. We are planning to move home, and my oldest son is moving from AZ to FL. Can't win. I think his brother will leave AZ and move back to WI someday.
I used to play that game with my sister years ago, but it had a different name. It was our mother's old game, and they were German/Swiss.

    1. Margot, we are so happy they all are living within 50 miles or so from us! I understand what you are feeling about family being spread all around. We had that and still do with our daughter in NH. I miss seeing her, but we do get to go on vacations together and she always comes home at Christmas. Our German checker game I think is not the correct name--still, we have fun with it and will probably call it by that name forever. ♥

  10. Isn't it wonderful to have grandkids around! Love your sweet butterfly whisperer!! I like the looks of that game. Too bad we can't keep the grands as close as we'd like, isn't it.
