Twenty-One

Our first grandchild, Samuel, turned twenty-one this past Sunday.  His Mom and Dad flew in for the weekend celebration.  How can Samuel possibly be twenty-one?  We are so proud to be his grandparents and to welcome him into our home as he attends college.  He is a hardworking fellow that helps his grandparents when needed and is always pleasant.  We have told his parents that there is no way we could possibly have just any young person living with us.  Yes, he is our grandson that we love very much.  We laugh and tell his parents that he is a much nicer, kinder person than even his parents or uncle is.  It's true and they admit that it's true.

We all went out to lunch for the celebration and then returned home for cake and ice cream. Samuel wanted to have a beer to celebrate turning twenty-one.

He took one sip and turned up his nose and ordered a orange cream soda in its place.  We all had a good laugh.

There are many blessings in life, but having wonderful grandsons is right up there on the top.  Do you think you could have or want your grandchild living in your home?

  1. I remember Samuel, and he has a pleasant smile every time you show pictures of him. Happy 21st Birthday to your dear grandson, Martha Ellen. Yes, I think I would love it if a grandchild lived with us. I don't have any yet, but I hope to one day. 21 is a special birthday, and I'm glad Samuel had a fun celebration with the family.

    1. Thank you, Dawn. We are enjoying these precious days with Samuel. I can hardly believe how quickly time has passed since he was born.
We finally have sunshine and wonderful weather to enjoy in the garden. Wishing you the same, dear one. ♥

  3. As I read, I wondered if he'd like the beer ~ then ~ Oh, how I laughed out loud when Samuel turned up his nose at his first beer! Please wish him a Very Happy Birthday {belated} from me. Twenty one is a significant age as all manner of milestones are reached. Here, until eighteen became the significant age, Twenty one signified the time you got the key to the door {in other words, you were adult enough to let yourself in and out of the house at your own bidding}
Sadly, Martha Ellen, I was never blessed with children, so no grand children for me, but I know I would welcome them to live with me with open arms had I been so blessed.

    1. Deb, thank you for the birthday wishes. I'll pass them along to Samuel. Here in the US you are legally able to have alcohol at 21, but at 18 are able to serve in the military. How strange is that?
Wishing you warm days in the garden, dear one. xoxo ♥

  4. Oh to be 21 again! I was married shortly after turning 21! That's cute that he didn't like the beer. I remember my first sip and I didn't try any for a long time after that. It's definitely one of those acquired tastes! I am going to become a grandmother this September for the first time! I had a nephew live with us when he was going to our local community college. It didn't last real long but he wasn't as well rounded as your grandson sounds. Cheers to turning 21!

    1. Congratulations on your upcoming grandchild's birth, Liz! You are going to be over the moon with emotion. It's one of the greatest joys.
I've never acquired a taste for beer and I'm a lot older than 21!
How generous of you to give your nephew an opportunity to go to school. We all need a chance to find our way. Have a wonderful day! ♥

  5. Happy Birthday to a wonderful grandson!!!

Our oldest grand daughter is 24. Our next oldest just graduated University. And she will be living with us, for the summer.

Her parents are changing homes and in transition, moving from this state, to another. And are living at her other grand parents home, for the summer. Sophia is there, for a week.

But then she is coming over here, for the rest of the summer. She flies to Japan, the end of July, for her first job! :-)))) So that is exciting. It's the position she really, really wanted. Which is even greater.

So.... Yes, we will have a grand here, for the summer at least. We are quite pleased, that she wants to spend her last free summer here.

    Hugs, Tessa

  7. Happy Birthday to Samuel! Our youngest learned to like beer while studying in Germany before he was 21, where anyone 16 can purchase beer. I, personally, took one sip and that was enough for me. I'd love to have my grandchildren live with me! But ask me again when they're teenagers (and I'm in my 70's).

    1. Cathy, Samuel is a big help to us when we need it. So maybe you'd like some extra help as you get older. I've learned from our youngest grand's mother, that in Germany they give beer to kids. It's not the same beer that adults drink. I personally don't care for it myself. ♥

  9. Well, he certainly sounds like a nice young man, Martha Ellen, and I chuckled at the orange cream soda vs. beer. :-) Having anyone, whether it's a grandchild or a friend or child wouldn't be easy after living with just the two of us, but I'm sure that a few adjustments need to be made by both parties and all will be well. Congratulations to him on his 21st birthday! And on you for your first NPG (non-paying guests). LOL Many blessings ahead.

  10. What a sweet tribute to your Samuel! To know that he is a nice, kind person says so much!! (I think he might take after his grandmother.)

I certainly would welcome one of my grandchildren to live with us if the situation was right. Not as a substitute parent...but to give loving support.

    Happy birthday to Samuel!!

    1. Cheryl, not a substitute parent, but to give loving support is exactly right. Grayden and I don't want to have to parent a grandchild and certainly not a 21 year old. I know there are many grandparents that need to parent a grandchild and I say God bless them for doing that! ♥

  11. Congrats to your grandson? They are indeed a huge blessing aren't they Martha Ellen? I don't know about living with them at this point in time....very differently lifestyles, however young ones are very busy and rarely home! You are a dear to host him while he continues his education! Blessings!!!

    1. Thank you, Betsy. It was an adjustment for us to have Samuel live with us. He is such an easy one to be around it makes it a joy to have him here. It seems like a natural progression for us to have him. He has been with us for a year and a half and I can truthfully say it's working out fine. Have a wonderful day! ♥

  12. I am sure we would enjoy our grandson living with us. But it is an undertaking that you seem to have thrived doing. He sounds like a wonderful young man and I'm sure you have had a part in that! I enjoyed the beer story and photo! Hope you have a wonderful holiday weekend.

  15. Martha< How wonderful to have a fine young kinsman living with you, helping out, (and you helping him with lodging as he goes thru school.). I'm glad he didn't like the beer... I wish Samuel the very best in his college years!

  16. Happy birthday to your grandson! How wonderful that he is living with you through his college years. People always tell me to enjoy my grandchildren while they are young as they don't have much to do with grandparents once they get older, but I'm hoping that is not true. I'd be happy to have a grandchild live with me if the need arises when they get older. I love all so very much as I know you love your handsome Samuel

    1. Pat, we are thrilled that Samuel wants to live with us. He lived quite a ways from us as he was growing up, but Grayden and I always tried to visit with him at least once a quarter. We are so blessed to have grandchildren that want to be around us. You made a major move to be close, so I can just imagine you will always be close to your grands. Have a great day! ♥
