Have you heard about hygge? I started seeing this word being used a few weeks ago on social media sites. I believe the first person I heard mention it was Deb . Then a few days ago I started seeing it everywhere. Susan Branch recently did a blog post about it. You can check out her post Here that really is a wonderful explanation of what hygge is. Really Susan Branch is the epitome of hygge!
Hygge (pronounced hoo-gah) is a Danish word that closely means cozy. In order to survive a long winter we all want to make our homes cozy and warm. Anything that makes you feel that way is hygge. Lighting candles, taking bubble baths, reading, sewing, writing, creating, cooking, painting, baking --whatever creates a joy filled life for you!
Hygge was never meant to be translated-it was meant to be felt.

I made a lovely soup this week that will bring hygge to your home. As the weather turns colder soups are always a welcome addition to our menus. If you are vegetarian I'm sure you can still make this soup and just add more vegetables. If you like stuffed peppers, you will like this soup.
Pepper Soup
- one large onion chopped
- two to three large bell peppers chopped
- one clove of garlic minced
Saute' vegetables in a tablespoon of olive oil.
When the onion is translucent add one pound of ground lean hamburger or ground turkey. Brown until cooked. Then add:
- one 28 ounce can of diced tomatoes
- one 15 ounce can of tomato sauce
- one tablespoon paprika
- one tablespoon chili powder
- one teaspoon salt
- one teaspoon freshly ground pepper
- one tablespoon of basil
- 4 cups of water
- 1 tablespoon of Worcestershire sauce
Let this soup simmer for one half hour and then add :
- one half cup of uncooked rice
Simmer the soup until the rice is done. If you want, you can top each bowl of soup with a grated sharp cheddar. Enjoy.
Another hygee activity around here is making s'mores. The eldest grand adores it.

DeleteYes! My daughter Madison is currently living in Denmark with her boyfriend and his family while she attends make up school there... That is one of the first things she told us about!!!! She says it is definitely a way of life there. : )

DeleteI noticed the word a few years ago when someone started pinning photos of my chairs and lamps and books in her hygge folder. If I had known what it meant, I'd have been flattered. Oh my goodness your soup looks and sounds so good. I do enjoy soup in cold weather. Who doesn't?

DeleteYes Hygge is sweeping the world and it's definitely something we can use a lot more of in our lives. I've been living this way for years, so it seems, as have many of us but it's only recently that it has been given a name.
ReplyDeleteThe soup looks delicious and as a vegetarian I would just swap out the meat for some rich and earthy dark lentils such as Puy. I'd also leave out the Worcestershire Sauce as that contains anchovies. It is certainly a soup that will enhance that feeling of hygge ~ I'd call it a "Hug in a Mug"

ReplyDeleteI am not sure if I would get enthusiasm for this soup, as I have a few who aren't enthused by bell peppers. I would love it! Maybe I'll make a pot for myself. It looks soooo yummy and comforting.

I have actually never heard of the word, thanks for sharing. Your books stacked up are so charming. And the cloth ornaments are cute. Me and my sister were just talking the other day about the handmade ornaments that our mom sewed. I still have them today. Your soup looks delicious, and it's nice having warm soups during the cold winter months. Stay warm and may your home be filled with much hygge this season. :)

I too have been reading about hygge and find it interesting. I think I've been practicing hygge all along, I place high value on cozy, etc.
