Happy May

The month of May just sounds so happy, don't you think?  Although I do believe April was more like May in my part of the world.  Even though the gardener has to have restraint, sitting on the patio with Grayden is a lovely way to view our garden and relax.

The trailing vinca that Grayden planted is thriving.  We've had wonderful rain and warm days to encourage all of our plants to do well.

We found a new outdoor rug for our patio.  The old one had seen better days.  It's so nice to have a defined spot on our concrete patio.  As you can see the new rug is smaller than the old one, but the quality of this one is much better and hopefully will last longer.

Caution photo ahead is of a snake!

If you're frightened scroll on down.  As I was hobbling along and looking down, I came upon a black snake sunning himself in the grass.  I'm not a big fan, but I do know they have their place in our world.  Considering all the moles and voles we've had in the past he or she can have all he or she wishes.

I can't leave you with that creature.  Our roses are really doing well this year.  They are blooming about 3 weeks early, but we are enjoying them so much.  The Climbing Pinkie has just been the prettiest ever!

"Won't you come into my garden?  I would like my roses to see you. "
Richard B. Sheridan

The Climbing Pinkie is not a full petaled rose, but I love her delicate bloom.  We don't have a lot of sun in our yard that is required of roses.  But I do have a couple spots here and there where I can grow them.

Even the knockout red roses are doing well.

Thank you for coming into my garden today.  How is your garden growing these days? ♥

  1. Your garden is looking lovely...think where it'll be by the end of May. My garden isn't much to talk about yet, but I noticed today that the azaleas are ready to pop.

    1. Vee, I know you are excited to see your azaleas! Our's are now looking faded and past their prime. Our really warm temperatures allowed their beauty for a short period of time. Enjoy your evening. ♥

Thank you for sharing, my friend.
We are just starting to see buds and colors in Pa, but it is getting cold and we may possibly see snow this weekend!

    1. Wow, Billie Jo, snow in May? That's really late, right? I hope the buds are not ruined for your Spring show. The weather is quite strange! Have a cozy week, my friend. ♥

  3. We had a snake in the garden and were not sure whether it was poisonous so called a snake catcher. A young women in high heels with a big purse came by, found the snake, picked it up and put it in her bag, got her pay and went away. I was speechless.

    1. That is hilarious, Amalia! Too many folks kill snakes around here. They call all of them poisonous copperheads. I admit to being quite afraid of them when I was younger. I hope your week is going well, my friend. ♥

  4. I agree ~ the Merrie Merrie Month of May just begs us to be up and dancing around the Maypole, doesn't it? I would sit with you, though, and watch until you are able to dance again, which I hope will be very soon!
My Grandmother always said "Cast not a clout until May be out" as May can be quite a fickle month weather~wise, and we often get late frosts in the garden so caution is the way forward in May.
I actually like snakes, but never see them in the garden, I suppose they know their limits here!
Your roses are a wondrous riot of colour! ~~~Deb xoxo

    1. Frosts hardly ever come to us in May. I would believe anything weather wise these days, though, Deb. I like your grandmother's quote--she knew never to be too sure about a late frost.
I have come to learn that snakes are quite beneficial in the garden. I used to have quite a fear of them. We don't see them to often, but after our rain he decided to enjoy a little sunshine.
Have a wonderful day, my friend. xoxo ♥

  6. I'm so glad that you are able to view your garden from your lovely patio, Martha Ellen! Your new rug is so pretty and turns your patio into a sweet garden room. Your roses are just gorgeous this Spring! It's so hard to imagine them in full bloom this early.

Thank goodness you were moving slowly and looking down as you walked through the grass. Eek!! I wonder if you and your 'visitor' frightened one another! That encounter was just too close for comfort! Hope that your knee is on the mend and that you are feeling a little better each and every day, my friend. Sending big hugs! ♡

    1. Dawn, it's been so nice to enjoy the garden from our patio. We enjoy it every year, but this one in particular. We have a chaise lounge that I usually sit in and prop my knee and add ice if needed. It is getting much better. This evening Grayden and I walked up to the corner (half a block at most) and back. I really miss our walks and wanted to see how it felt. I must admit I'm not ready to walk our 2 miler yet, but this is a start.
The snake encounter was not frightening at all as he was so docile sunning himself. I'm so glad I was looking ahead and down so as not to startle him or me! Grayden had time to fetch Samuel and the camera so we could all enjoy our little encounter! I hope your week is going well, my friend. ♥

  7. Your roses are beautiful! I've not seen a Climbing Pinkie before. My roses are budding--so soon....Surprising I've not seen a snake in our parts yet--but then it's been cool this week. Your new rug goes very nicely with your table and chairs.

    1. Cathy, I adore pink climbers and bought two 10 years ago, the Climbing Pinkie and New Dawn. Unfortunately 4 years ago Rose Rosette claimed my New Dawn. I was warned to watch my other roses. I'm so thankful that Pinkie is doing well. ♥

  9. Lovely pictures. Your garden is growing well. Thanks for the snake warning. I ran over one with the lawnmower the other day. I was so surprised. Actually I think I just got his tail and the rest of him wandered off. They are in abundance this spring in our are and all the rain hasn't helped as they like to come out to sun. I am terrified of them, I have to say. I really watch closely now when I mow.

    1. Dotsie, surely the snake will stay away from you and your lawnmower. I used to be like you. Totally terrified. When our children were small and Grayden was on business travel, a snake came up our side steps and was quite aggressive. I had to go get the pickax and take care of him. I'm not sure what kind he was, but he was not welcome in our home. ♥

  10. Thank you for the tour of your garden. Your pink roses look so pretty! Our tulips are blooming in our backyard and the lilac buds are growing bigger. Also the pink bleeding hearts are growing tall. Any day now, they will bloom. Have a lovely rest of the week, Martha Ellen! XO

  11. Martha Ellen, that is such a cool patio rug. It has a unique design and looks good with your patio set. That was so nice of you to caution about the snake - I'm not a fan of them either. Your roses are really blooming right now, and so pretty. Do you know that's my favorite quote for roses? I used it one time on my blog early on. Your red roses made my evening, Martha Ellen. I just love your pictures. There is something so special about them.

    Happy May!

    1. Sheri, I know you are a longtime rose fan. I love them as well. I don't have a lot of sun in my yard, but have just enough to allow us to have a few in our garden. They are the most regal of all the flowers in my humble opinion. I wish you could visit mine. Have a wonderful evening, my friend. ♥

  12. I agree about your thoughts of May. I'm so excited that it's here since this is when we can start to really enjoy spring! Your pink roses are so pretty- love the soft pink coloring. Snakes always scare me but the kind that hangs around us are harmless so I ignore them the best I can. Your new rug is beautiful- love the pattern you chose! I hope you are feeling better and getting some relief.

  13. Your garden is way ahead of ours, Martha Ellen. We had snow this past weekend, but it melted quickly and now the hills are greening up with all the moisture. Things will begin blooming here in June. I'm not a snake fan --th eone and only time I saw one I jumped 10 feet backward...lol!

  14. Very well, thank you! It took about 5 years for my vinca to finally take off, I had forgotten about them until I was weeding that border the other day and surprise, surprise, there they were! Roses are so lovely, the look, the scent, the vines, everything about them; they are easy to grow as well!

  17. The roses are beautiful...can't grow them to save me! Snakes have their place in the world and as long as it's far from me, I'm a happy woman. Because of the dogs and cats, I rarely see snakes...perhaps twice in 22+ years...? You took a fabulous photo of that black snake, very nicely done.

  19. My roses aren't even beginning to bud yet, so I am a bit envious of your beauties!! This past weekend, my husband and I worked in the yard together. We weeded our gardens. Funny...even though the roses aren't blooming yet, the weeds are in full force. The growing season for weeds isn't limited!!

Your outdoor space is lovely. A perfect spot for relaxing on a summer afternoon.

  21. How did I miss this post, Martha Ellen? Busy days here! A couple of weeks ago I said, "I am looking forward to summer." Bekah, knowing my dislike of heat and humidity, said, "I can't believe you're saying that, Mom." What I really mean is that I am looking forward to the summer schedule.

Oh, your place is looking so springy and beautiful! Love the new rug! I could sit out there on your patio . . . reading, chatting, sipping . . . all day long, I think. Of course, in my imagination, it is about 70 degrees and the humidity is low.

And now I know that you are a gardener through and through! If you can let Mr. Black Snake live there in your garden to take care of the moles and voles . . . yep, you're a gardener at heart!

Happy Springtime and a Happy Mother's Day to you!!

I hope your Mother's Day is filled with love and relaxation, dear one. ♥
