Beyond Colonial Williamsburg

Staying for a week in Williamsburg allows us to explore beyond the Colonial area.  Williamsburg offers great shopping outlets.  I have friends and family that just take a trip there to do their Christmas shopping.  There is also the large Yankee Candle Store.  We always enjoy visiting this spot to stock up on our candles.  It is another one of Yankee Candle's Flagship stores.  Their candles have become so expensive that I only buy them now when I have one of their buy two, get two free coupons.  There are many other things in their store that are fun to enjoy.  We bought one new mail wrap for our mailbox.  If you are not familiar, they attach to your mailbox with a magnet to allow a change of season look.

We also bought a new bird bath to replace the one the tree surgeons broke last year.  It's glass, so I hope I haven't made a mistake.  Storing it inside for winter will be imperative.

My very favorite place to visit is the Antique Mall!  I have shown you photos from here in the past.  Sometimes it's just a walk down memory lane and sometimes I find something that just has to come home with me.  Grayden knew that so he gifted me these goodies on Valentine's.

Walking around the Antique Mall we encountered many beautiful items.  I'm sure you will see something you would love to have!

I had never seen Matthew Rice's Williamsburg dinnerware before.  He is married to Emma Bridgewater.  I'm sure you are familiar with the beautiful pottery they make in England.  We have been to their pottery in Stoke-On-Trent and I am quite smitten with her mugs.  There is no more room on my shelf to buy anymore!

There are rows and rows of different antiques.

There are so many beautiful coverlets and quilts today!

These antique Valentines were exquisite.

This spool cabinet made my heart sigh.  Such a wonderful cabinet to keep all of your threads.

Pewter and tole painted trays were abundant and lovely.

Let's have some tea and cake.  We can wash and dry our cups and saucers with these adorable tea towels.  By the way the cake is no calorie--I have no idea what it's made of!

A fine collection of Madame Alexander dolls were displayed in one booth.

Are you ready to check out your purchases?  I think it's time to leave.  I hope you enjoyed! ♥

Meandering through an antique mall is one of my very favorite things to do! I see lots of goodies in your photos. I feel certain I'd have come out with something. (Or somethings!) Your new/old treasures are wonderful! Nice job, Grayden!

    1. It is so much fun to see so many beautiful antiques from our parent's and our own childhood, Cheryl. Grayden was so sweet to add to my Beatrix Potter collection. ♥

  2. I have enjoyed this little shopping trip, and know my bank manager will not be very happy with me! How the outlets have increased, for I only remember the Pfalzgraff outlet, and a one other. I no longer buy Yankee Candle, I now use essential oils in a burner, and blend myself, for they are too expensive, but a treat to visit a YC store!

I think I would have picked the spool cabinet also, and maybe the sewing machine if it's a hand turned one.

I did not know Matthew Rice did crockery!!! He has done some mug patterns for the Churches Conservation Trust, but oh! a dinner service would surely come home with me. It must be USA only, as often happens, some things don't cross The Pond, in either direction.

    My, I've waffled on enough!

    1. Deb, I was so surprised to see the Matthew Rice dishes as well! If you click on the photo hopefully you can read about this pattern being from the rare breed conservation in Colonial Williamburg.
The Singer sewing machine was one of two manual ones in the building. The spool cabinet would be beautiful alongside that beauty.
Waving to you, my friend across the Pond! xoxo ♥

  3. I certainly did enjoy the tour, I have been up and down several times. I too swooned over the spool cabinet but finally decided on the singer sewing machine. What an amazing place to visit.

  4. SO many wonderful items in that store! I'm surprised you made it out with just the few purchases you made. You must have a great deal of will power! 😀

    1. Willpower had nothing to do with it, Cathy--my pocketbook did! Lol There is always something to tempt us, isn't it? It is fun to see all the beautiful things that have survived so many years. Enjoy your weekend. ♥

  7. I just love getting out and going antiquing (looking)...haha. It is a great way to spend sometime, seeing things that make you think of the past and your granny :). I hardly buy cause I have enough antiques that was my great aunts or great granny's. But I still love going and looking. In that one pic above that looks like the candy dispensers I looked and my eyes went right to ......Wizard of OZ. I have a set of those. Love them. Looks as if you had a great time. Love the mailbox cover and if I was smart with that I could change it out like you said...but I think I will just go ahead and paint my own on there....have a great rest of the weekend.

    1. Pam, I'm trying very hard to only bring into our home only the things we love. I have items in my home from family members like you. Aren't they just wonderful? That's so neat you have The Wizard of Oz Pez dispensers. We have some that were our children's. I hope you will show your finished mailbox. I can just bet it will be lovely. Enjoy the evening. ♥

  8. This is my kind of shop, Martha. Ellen. I love antique shops, and this one is filled with wonderful goodies. The blue dish section caught my eye, as blue china is the prettiest to me. And all those dolls - how cute they are. The Singer Sewing machine made me smile, as my mom was a great seamstress and had a Singer. That was so nice of your husband to buy you all the goodies. Is that the first and original Yankee Candle Store?

It was a treat to see all these antique lovelies, Martha Ellen.

    1. Sheri, you would really love seeing all the blue and white transfer ware dishes at this antique mall. I do believe it's a classic. My Mama made many of my clothes growing up. She would even put my initials on the blouses she made me and my sisters. Do you like to sew like your Mom? The original Yankee Candle Store I believe was in Deerfield, Mass. We went there years ago with Samuel.
I hope you are well, my friend. Have a nice weekend. ♥

    2. I don't sew that well, just basic things like pillows, sachets, but I admire my mom so much for sewing many of me and my sister's clothes, and she could read patterns as well. She always made me something special if I ever had a fancy party to go to. I'd love to see the original Yankee Candle Store sometime. We have one at our mall here, and it's always nice to visit. I wanted to tell you that I looked at the bottom of my Pink rose candy dish, and sure enough it was the same name that you mentioned. : )

    3. I thought the candy dish of your's was Old Country Roses, Sheri. I used to sew all of my clothes when I first married. I made clothes for my children as well. Then I became more busy as a young mother and let that go. I still have my original Sears sewing machine that Grayden gave me in our first year of marriage. I only do simple things now as well. Sounds like our Mama's were alike, Sheri! ♥

    4. Yes, my candy dish is Old Country Roses. I think I may have already mentioned that to you on your Bolton Abbey post. : )

  9. Goodness! I almost forgot to return after I wandered off in search of Matthew Rice images. That dinnerware is darling...a fence with chickens running about? Anyway, the Bridgewater-Rices have a fascinating story.

Now I am sure that you’ll have to boot me out of the antique shop. I do not allow myself the luxury of wandering through very often and I seem to be lost.

    1. Oh my Vee, I hope you can find your way out. If not, there are plenty of quilts and such to snuggle. Also there is plenty to read as well.
Glad you looked into the Bridgewater-Rice connection. ♥

  10. I do love a good antique mall. Enjoyed your photos. I still enjoy looking even though there's little I will buy now as we try to pare down. I remember on a visit to Wmsbg how we bought some pottery at a large outlet just outside of town. They still remain among my favorites today! We also got a beautiful pewter lantern--right "in style" with today's decorating even though that was probably 35 years ago!

    1. Classics never go out of style, do they? I think you are probably bought your pottery at the Pottery Factory. It used to be a wonderful spot to pick up many things at really great prices. Unfortunately the owner passed away and his wife rebuilt the stores and now charges big prices to go along. Your lantern sounds lovely. I will have to look for it on your blog. ♥

  11. So many delightful items! I love spending time in antique stores and just thinking of all the people from the past and how they lived. Sad though when I see old pictures there.... always wondered why the families didn't keep them. Hope you have a great week!

    Blessings,
    Jill

    1. I agree with you, Jill, it's so sad to see family photos in boxes. I imagine there are a number of reasons for that. When we've been cleaning out items in our home, pictures will never go. Have a happy afternoon. ♥

  12. What a fabulous antique mall! I would be in my glory browsing there as I love old things. I probably would not buy anything s=a s I am trying hard to downsize my life and possessions, but I'd love to look. I remember we loved to visit the Williamsburg Pottery Factiory. It had a large outdoor area and had hand made pottery outside and dishes and glasses inside. It is still in the area? It has been many years since we shopped there but I still use many items I purchased in the 80's and 90's.

    1. Pat, it's sad, but the Pottery has changed! The owner passed away and his wife decided to make it "fancier"! New buildings, new displays, new merchandise and NEW prices. Not the Pottery we used to love.
I frequently just browse in antique shops as well. I really don't "need" anything. My husband knows how much I love adding to my Beatrix Potter collection--I couldn't resist! ♥
