Springtime Thoughts

Spring is peaking in our garden!  There are so many trees and shrubs and flowers showing off their beauty.  About this time in my garden I want the beauty to stay around a little longer.  I'm not in charge (thank goodness), so everything has its season and blossoms for a certain period of time.  Today was in the 90's so I'm afraid the spring blossoms will be fleeting soon, but more lovelies will bloom as summer begins.

"Came the spring with all its splendor.  All its birds and all its blossoms.  All its flowers and leaves and grasses. "
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

All of the dogwoods in our yard were planted by the birds and I do thank them very much for the gifts they give.  We get seedlings coming up all the time and place them where we want them.  The dogwood is the Virginia state tree.  It's one of my favorite trees to blossom on our property.  They really do light up our windows with their lovely white blossoms.

If you know of a more lovely blossom, please let me know.

The wisteria are now buzzing with bees and showing their beauty.

Azaleas are blooming!

Can you believe we bought all of these azaleas 45 years ago for one dollar a piece in one gallon containers?  It takes time to grow a garden, so start today.  You won't be sorry!

I've also had to remove the chipped paint from my Mama's pots and give them a nice coat of paint.  I like to plant annuals to brighten the patio and the front porch.  I had to giggle to myself at this point as they look like cows to me at this stage!

I think my Mama would like how they look now.

We continue to have quite a crop of mushrooms growing through the chipped up oak we had removed last year.

This one grew to be quite large!

Isn't nature fascinating?  I stand in amazement over the beauty of our earth!

The Columbine is blooming.  These sweet little flowers pop up all along the perennial bed.  I have red ones as well that I need to photograph.

I am sure that this Viburnum will be turning into white snowballs with the warmer temperatures.

The peonies survived the removal of yet another black gum tree a couple of weeks ago.

"In the Spring, at the end of the day, you should smell like dirt."  Margaret Atwood

I so enjoy gardening.  I hope you have been able to plant something to nurture at your home.  It doesn't have to be on a large scale.  A simple pot of flowers will make you smile.

I recently won a giveaway at Teresa's blog.  She sent me the most lovely bead that she made.  I told her I thought I would put it on a key to a cabinet, but instead decided to put it on the pull chain of the fan in our kitchen.  I think it looks nice there and will remind me the kindness of friends here in Blogdom.  Thank you Teresa

Teresa's hand made bead is on the right and Mary Engelbreit's teapot is on the left.

  1. That one pink azalea looks like one giant bouquet. I see your Peonies are doing very well too. Always look forward to their bloom. Your Mom would be proud of how you have taken care of the pots and I do like the color black on them a lot. I painted a few of mine black makes red geraniums pop when planted in them.
I envy you being able to successfully grow wisteria. I have no luck with that what so ever and I think it's just a beautiful color purple dripping from the trees or trellis.
I will get out early and get some work done before the rain on Saturday and Sunday.

    1. Betsy, I'm so glad I have my Mama's pots. She placed them on her front porch and filled them with red geraniums. Her pots were always white, but I don't think she minds that I have painted them black.
We have two wisteria that we try to keep in a tree form. They really are a pain to keep pruned, but they came from my husband's Mama's garden so we keep them. Enjoy your time in the garden. ♥

  2. Your garden is looking beautiful! We had azaleas when we lived in Florida. They are gorgeous. My wisteria is only just not starting to bloom. It is a long way from looking like yours.

    1. Thank you, Patti. Azaleas do really well here. I do hope your wisteria brings you joy this season. I have a love hate with it because we constantly have to prune it to keep it under control! ♥

    1. Today will be another 90 degree day, so I'm sure the flowering shrubs and trees will be fleeting. Spring is a short season for us. We seem to go from winter to summer quite quickly. Sending you sunny days! ♥

  4. What a lovely, lovely post! Springtime is so very beautiful and that is obvious there in your yard! So many pretty things! Indeed, our Creator is marvelous and you do great things with His gifts! I like your advice about planting something. Even we non-gardening enthusiasts can take pleasure in a beautiful pot of flowers or a new hydrangea. :)

I also enjoyed the peek at your kitchen. I think you've found the perfect place for your new bead!

    Happy springtime to you, friend!

  6. I'm so pleased that you received the bead safely and that you found a good use for it. Gracie was here yesterday and she got to pick hers out of my basket full of handmade beads. I like the one you picked with the little flower on it. I love your kitchen and the checkered teapot! All of your garden flowers are looking gorgeous! ((hugs)), Teresa :-)

  7. Well, my friend, much as I would like some warmer weather, I think I'll let you keep your 90 degrees! Too hot, but the summer flowers will like it. Such pretty blooms you have now, so I hope they don't wilt away. It's wonderful that you still have your Mama's pots!

Well done on the win, I like what you did with it, and just adore the sweet tea pot.

    1. Deb, it's really way too warm for us this early. The weather is so crazy, but tomorrow we are expecting more seasonal temperatures in the 70's. We had to turn the air conditioner on today--ugh!
I'm sure you've guessed by now, I'm quite sentimental and love having my Mama's flower pots. I hope you enjoy a lovely warm weekend, full of sunshine! ♥

  10. Such a nice post. My mother had friend that always sent her cards with Helen Steiner Rice on them. And I love your new bead. It seems it was in England when I first saw little beads or such on the end of fan and light pulls. So now we have them too and they do bring a smile. Your garden looks fresh and beautiful! I do love dogwoods!

  11. I can't believe the Azaleas are still blooming after 45 years, Martha Ellen. This flower is special, as I had a big bush of them in the front yard of my old house. Your red Azaleas are so pretty. You did a nice job on your Mama's pots. The Columbine is the most unusual flower, and very lovely. Martha Ellen, I have been looking all over for a black and white checkered tea pot. Can I ask you where you got that from? Your kitchen is so charming. The tea pot ornament is cute, and I love the brick in your kitchen.

So glad Spring has arrived there, and enjoy all these flowers while you can. : )

    1. Sheri, azaleas are long lived shrubs. In fact some live hundreds of years! My teakettle on the stove is MacKenzie-Childs Courtly Check. I bought it a couple of months ago and I now love it! The lid was a little tight at first, but now works great. I'm a big tea drinker and use it quite often to make tea.
I hope you are enjoying Spring in your area. I've sure missed your posts, my friend. Your girls do write lovely posts. I'm sure you are really proud of them! Have a lovely weekend. ♥

  12. Martha Ellen, your garden is a joy to behold! I adore your dogwood blossoms. I wish we could grow dogwood trees in our area. Your wisteria blooms are so pretty!! While growing up, we gave our mom an azalea plant for the garden every year on Mother's Day. Such sweet memories! Your mama's pots have a lovely, new look. She would be so proud that you are taking such good care of them! Will you fill them with geraniums this year?

Spring is finally tiptoeing into the Midwest. Our magnolia is in full bloom this week. We
also have a bit of color from tulips, daffodils, pulmonaria... and dandelions, of course. I'm looking forward to May 15th, our safe planting day. It always feels like a special holiday when we plant containers to enjoy on our front porch! It's delightful to walk through your garden together, my friend!

    1. Dawn, I love that you gave your Mom an azalea for every Mother's Day! I can imagine she really adored those sweet gifts and must think of them with love when she sees them! I'm excited for you and all the beauty that will be coming your way! I bet your magnolia is stunning.
I planted dusty miller, Victoria blue salvia and a red dahlia in each of my Mama's pots. I'm hoping for a fuller look in them this year. We'll see. It won't be long before your safe planting day comes. Enjoy the joy that your garden brings, sweet friend! ♥

  18. Spring looks so beautiful in your area, Martha Ellen! Columbine is Colorado's state flower, and ours are beginning to grow now but have a while till they bloom. Our temperatures are beginning to reach the 70's so everything is beginning to grow and bloom here, but we can still get night time snow until the end of May, so I wait to plant annuals.
    Enjoy these beautiful days!

    1. It's so nice to have you visit, Zaa. Our mushrooms are so interesting to us, but we would NEVER eat them-- we know nothing about whether they are poisonous or not! They come up totally on their own from the old oak tree that was removed last year.
I'm sure Spring is knocking at your door and I look forward to seeing what is blooming for you! Have a lovely day, sweet friend. ♥
