Snowy Days

Virginia is not really known for receiving a lot of snow.  So most of us that grew up here delight when the meteoroligist mentions the word.  Snow has come to us for the last few weeks.  Some of us dislike it and some of us love it.  I happen to be a member of the latter group.  How about you?

I love how the snow quiets the world around me.  The hush that comes when it's snowing feels peaceful.

My garden doesn't look particularly great this time of year, but when it's snow covered it looks better.

The snow covers up a myriad of things including all the leaves that have not been raked yet!

Grayden and I decided to "fly" away to one of our favorite places again.  If you read my last post we went to Colonial Williamsburg after not having visited for a couple of years.  So we took a little trip south there for a few more days.  And guess what?  It snowed there twice while we were there!

Bundled up with our winter gear,  we still were able to take our daily walks.

My favorite Compton Oak looking lovely as usual with its snow skirt all around its base.

This American Sycamore tree looks lovely against the azure sky!  There is a great variety of trees that are easy to see their form in winter.

It's always a pleasure to visit Colonial Williamsburg.  Each season reveals more beauty.  Thank you for visiting with us on this snowy afternoon.  Stay warm and cozy wherever you are!

  1. We visited there about 15 years ago, and I would love to go back someday!

  2. How fun that it even snowed in Williamsburg. What's that they say? Something about snow being the great equalizer. (Snow? I do not love it, though neither do I hate it unless it is the third storm in a week.)

    1. The thought of snow being the great equalizer is a nice one, Vee. I hope the recent storms have not been too much trouble for you!

  3. How wonderful that you could go back again to visit! Haha, yes, the snow is covering a lot of tasks left undone for us! We do enjoy the snow as long as we can still get out to do the necessaries! Lovely photos!

    1. Ellen, our snows are hardly trouble for us. There has been only one recent one that even required snow shoveling. Thank you for your kind comments.

  4. Colonial Williamsburg in the snow! How magical, but must have driven home the hardships endured by the original inhabitants {conversely, how did they cope with all those heavy layers of clothing in summer?}
Like you, I love snow, only now I'm not so sure my body would cope as well as it did. I love how it quiets the world with silently settling flakes, and how it changes the appearance of the familiar.

    1. Deb, I do think we tend to romanticise days of old. Of course, even now the hardship of snow to our north is really no joke. When folks lose electricity, heat and all the comforts we are used to it brings it all into focus. I do hope you are staying warm and cozy! xoxo

  5. I'm so happy to know that you are all doing well and enjoying the snow, Martha Ellen! I think of you every time I watch the weather. I love the peaceful, beauty of snowy days at home, too! My favorite thing to do is take a snowy walk with my camera. I have even gotten a few 'shoveling workouts' recently. We are expecting another snow storm mid-week.
Thank you so much for sharing your beautiful garden visitors in the snow. Your photos are just lovely. Colonial Williamsburg on a quiet, snowy day looks amazing! It makes my heart smile to know that you and Grayden have been enjoying some extra-special adventures!! Many thanks for taking us along!
Take extra-good care, dear heart! Warmest hugs! 💗Dawn

    1. Dawn, it's so nice to hear from you! I think of you often, my friend. Seeing the weather I thought of you with the upcoming week's snow. Snow shoveling is quite strenuous. I do hope you are careful with those workouts. Snow makes everything look so clean and lovely. I hope you share your snow photos that far exceed our totals.
Grayden and I couldn't have asked for a more lovely, quiet, peaceful week in Colonial Williamsburg. There were few folks there so we felt very safe. I'm so glad you came along for our adventure! Stay warm and cozy, dear friend. xoxo

  6. I'm glad you enjoy seeing the snow around your neck of the woods, Martha Ellen, and I do as well. I never tire of seeing this white wonder. And to see that wonderful red Cardinal against the white snow would be magical. That big tree looks so unusual with its gnarly trunk. I'm glad you got to visit one of your favorite places, and that it snowed while you were there! That Compton Oak is HUGE! Looks very old too.

Stay warm during this Winter season, Martha Ellen. It's pretty cold here also, and just staying warm with soups and hot drinks lately. By the way, your little Angel covered in snow is beautiful.

    1. Thank you, dear Sheri for the sweet comments. Visiting Colonial Williamsburg is one of our favorite things to do. Having two small snowfalls was perfect as we could still enjoy being there without disruption. I love seeing all the lovely trees there. The Compton Oak is one of my favorite trees of all! I hope you are staying warm and cozy and enjoying your winter view.

  7. I am not winter's greatest fan, but we do have a lot more of it than you and the novelty wears off! I love that you took off for Williamsburg. I love that place and haven't been in ages! I'm glad you've been savoring the snow -- and taking care of your bird friends who are probably very confused!

  9. We don't often have snow in our part of the UK but if it should snow I do think it can look quite pretty.
Many thanks for sharing these lovely photographs.

My good wishes for the new month of February.

  10. Snow really is wonderful at accenting trees and garden items! I’m sure the birds are grateful for the food. I’m sure Williamsburg is wonderful anytime of year but I know it’s more peaceful in the winter!

    1. Liz, I love the way my garden and landscapes look with snow blanketing them. Grayden and I were so happy to have the quietness of January in Colonial Williamsburg.

  11. Oh my goodness. Colonial Williamsburg in the snow must be nearly as spectacular as Colonial Williamsburg dressed for Christmas! I am so happy that you and Grayden chose to make the trip again at exactly the right time!

Snow is so beautiful and there is something lovely about being hunkered down and snowed in for a time. I don't like driving in it and am grateful that I rarely need to! But now that my parents are older, there is that concern because they are rarely content to stay in for more than a day!

    1. Cheryl, we too are happy to stay in during snow events. We are fortunate that we really don't need to get out. Cabin fever can set in with some folks and that can be a concern.
Colonial Williamsburg never disappoints us. We are glad when we can visit anytime of the year, but the snow added another layer of joy.

    2. How lovely that it snowed while you were in Williamsburg. It is one of my most favorite places but I have never seen it other than in the warmer months. I enjoy snow just as long as I don’t have to drive in it. I find it very peaceful to see it falling outside, tucked inside a warm house. Your photos of both your birds at the feeders, that pretty stone angel and the sights around W’burg are wonderful! So nice to see you smiling at us in one of your photos. Enjoy the rest of the week Martha Ellen and stay warm :)

    3. Denise, visiting Williamsburg during the winter months is very quiet. We felt like we had the place to ourselves. With the snow it was quite nice. I'm with you in as I too enjoy the snow from the warmth of our home. I hope you are doing okay. I saw a post that you have fallen. Oh dear, do take care!

    4. Thank you Martha Ellen, I didn't want to worry anyone and published it by mistake, retrieved it very quickly and put it onto my private blog. I didn't realize anyone had seen it :0 I write these things down to try and understand why things happen, and reinforce taking care not to do that again!!! (I was carrying a load of clothes downstairs for the washer. I have been told not to do that but wait for hubby, but want to get things done and there you go.) It was a doozy of a fall, but all I have to show for it are several bruises, a few aches and pains. Hasten to add I'm okay, it could have been much worse. Thanks so much for asking xo

    5. I'm so glad you are okay, my friend, except for bruises. I'm so sorry I brought it up, but I was concerned. I didn't have a way to send you a private message. If you want me to delete the comment I will. Take care and enjoy your weekend.

    6. Thank you Martha Ellen and I appreciate the concern, believe me. You don't have to delete and thanks for being so sweet for asking. All's well here. Hope you are staying warm and keeping your electricity :)

  12. Beautiful photos! I love snow! The only part of it I dislike is driving when roads are icy, but other than that I love beautiful snowy days. We had had snow every week in January, but so far none in February. March is usually our snowiest month so hopefully we will catch up again then. The snow pack is needed for many reservoirs and rivers.

  15. I love the snow, always have. I remember growing up and having to be out of school a week or more. I also remember having to go on a Saturday once because of so many days missed. Williamsburg is so pretty as you say in the snow. Good you got in walks and enjoyed the winter scenery there. My husband loves the beach when it snows. I am hoping for more.

  16. Oh Martha Ellen, I didn't buy the painting. I just came across it on the internet one day and passed it along to the kids for Valentine's Day. I wish I did have it though, it's such a lovely painting, and the artist is really talented.

Guess what? I just looked out my door and it's starting to snow. I hear it will snow through the evening, so not sure how much we'll get yet. Thank you for visiting, Martha Ellen. I always love when you do.
