January Snow Days

Snow is magical to me.  It quiets the world around me.  Though many find it hard to deal with I've always loved it.  The shoveling is left to those stronger in our home so I can make soup and maybe hot chocolate for the guys when they come inside.  My days of sliding down the hills with my children are over but it's fun to see neighborhood children playing and enjoying the school free days.  We haven't had many snows in the last few years so this recent snow was welcome in our home.

I'm not sure how much snow we received but it was reported close to 10 inches.

The birds are happy to have seed they can access.  Samuel and Grayden refilled this one a couple of days after the snow stopped as it was getting empty.  This is a very large feeder that our son gifted me many years ago.

Bird watching is wonderful on any day but is especially lovely when it snows.

The Nellie Stevens Holly is loaded with berries.  My Nanny always said when there are plentiful berries around the winter will be harsh.  Maybe she was on to something.

The flag has been flapping vigorously as our winds are blustery.

Tea is my favorite drink any time of the year but especially on these chilly winter days.  This little teapot was a recent gift from Alex and Miles.  They know their grandmother well.  I just love this sweet gift.

The Wolf Moon has been shining brightly.  I do hope you have taken notice.  The shadows that it casts against the snow is quite lovely.  The moon is so bright it appears like another sun.  Of course the moon does not cast its own light.  Moonlight is actually reflected sunlight.

"The moon, like a flower in heaven's high bower, With silent delight sits and smiles on the night."
William Blake

I'll be taking a blog break from visiting and posting dear friends.  I hope to join you again in late May. I'll miss each of you!  Spring will be here before we know it!  Enjoy it all.

  2. We have the same saying here in Britain. The more berries, the redder the berries, the harder the winter to come. One friend of mine maintained the more berries, the better the weather had been in the spring.
I share your love of snow, but these days it is not for me. These days, I dread it. It would make me a prisoner in my own home. I will never forget the day we arrived in Virginia. From CA. we had driven cross country. as we approached the Eastern Seaboard. So the weather changed drastically. It was one of the coldest winters. I think you'd had on record. We literally crawled from Richmond to Virginia Beach. I think it took us about 10 hours.
It sounds as if another cruise is imminent. We will miss you, but I know you will be having a wonderful time again.

  3. That's a darling teapot! I love tea, too, and it's perfect for these cold winter days. You have about twice the snow we have, but even with less, those birds are gobbling it down! I noticed mine need refilling today too. Glad I bought more seed yesterday (those birds are more expensive to take care of than Lizzie -- and she eats premium cat food!)

  4. I am jealous. You got more snow than we did. I heard more is in the forecast. Next week much colder.
I love that teapot! I have been drinking more tea lately and I have it like Mama always does with cream and sugar, I have been going easier on the sugar these days though. I do like my coffee with just cream.

  6. Martha Ellen, I so enjoyed this post and each and every picture you took. That is a wonderful photo of the red cardinal and his partner. And I love the picture of the snow covering the red berries. It looks like you got about a foot of snow, how wonderful. The teapot that Alex and Miles gave you is delightful. The red carnations are so pretty too. Have a nice break, Martha Ellen, and I always miss your presence here in blog land. You are such a gem.

  7. There’s something so serene about snow, especially when it brings moments of peace and warmth inside. It’s lovely how you’ve embraced the beauty of it, even as your role has shifted over the years. The snow may quiet the world around you, but it also brings a sense of joy, whether it’s through birdwatching or simply watching the neighbourhood children enjoy their day off. What a beautiful reminder of the simple pleasures that can fill our hearts.

  8. Martha Ellen, I am so happy that you enjoyed your snow! Snow is not an "every year" occurrence here, so it is special when it happens. (Bekah went sledding with some friends and loved it!) Love all of the photos of your feathered friends in the snow. I also love the sweet teapot that your grandsons gave you! Such a thoughtful gift!

I will miss seeing you in Blogland! Enjoy your break, friend!

  9. What a snowy wonderland, dear Martha Ellen! It's so nice that you could enjoy these winter delights through the lens of your camera, while Grayden and Samuel took care of the snow. Your photos are truly beautiful!! I've missed our visits, my friend. I thought I would try to comment again. (Fingers crossed!) I'm hoping that you and Grayden have a special adventure planned!! It will be lovely to hear from you in May!! Warmest hugs! 🩷
