The day has come that we must leave my beloved Lake District. Yes, I'm claiming the Lake District MINE as my heart is there. Coming to this area has been a dream for so long. Dreams do come true! We have seen and experienced more than we could ever imagine!
We're not too sad, maybe, because we still have three more days to see more of this beautiful England. We have our bags packed and are ready to pack the car bright and early as we have a long journey ahead of us today. Even though it will be out of the way we are going to York. I'm excited, so let's get going.
The beautiful stone walls guide us on our journey to York. We must go around a large mountain range. The scenery thrills us, but the weather is quite overcast and storms are threatening.
As we descend down in elevation, the weather is improving. Look--the roads are great--little traffic and shoulders on the A road! Grayden is loving this drive!
I must show you one of the adorable phone booths that still dot some of the street corners in small towns.
Everywhere I look there is charm. We are approaching York and I get a glimpse of the remains of the walled city!
The city or ‘bar’ walls of York are the most complete example of medieval city walls still standing in England today. Beneath the medieval stonework lie the remains of earlier walls dating as far back as the Roman period.
We must find a car park in this busy city! Luckily we make a left turn and there is one with an available spot. Grayden pays at the pay station and we gather our belongings to go see York!
Walking through the ancient walls of York we see what we both came to York for! The beautiful York Minster!
There is a service going on and we must return later to view the inside of this magnificent cathedral.
Just to the back of the Minster is the Treasurer's House. Let's go over and see this lovely home.
We must walk around the side of the Minster down this curved sidewalk.
The National Trust has under its care this opulent home of Frank Green. It was the first house that the National Trust received with all of its collections and furnishings intact. The home sits on an ancient Roman road and its history spans over 2,000 years. We must go inside for a look around!
There is a lovely bed of tulips blooming as we prepare to go in.
We enter through the door and are greeted by the lovely folks that tell us about this opulent, interesting place. They direct us to the fireplace and then we continue on our self-guided tour.
The beauty of this home is reflected in all the lovely mouldings and furnishings.
Let's go upstairs and have a look around.
Let's look around the bedrooms.
This beautiful tapestry is in one of the bedrooms.
I love these beautiful oval portraits!
Let's go down into the basement to their tearoom and have some lunch before we go to see the York Minster!
What would you like? They have Coronation Chicken Salad, so that's what I'm having! After lunch we are going into a very special place of worship! I can't wait to show you! Enjoy your lunch and make sure you bring your jacket when we leave as it's quite windy outside! ♥

The first one up sounds great! Those beds are quite magnificent. That highway might have been the best you drove on or that your husband drove on. Did you ever give it a try?
ReplyDeleteVee, the beds in the Treasurer's House were exquisitely beautiful. Grayden asked me several times if I wanted to drive, even in a parking lot and I said NO! The roundabouts would have been my downfall! I could have (I'm sure) stepped up and driven if it were really necessary---glad it wasn't! ♥
DeleteWonderful recap! And your lunch sounds delicious.
ReplyDeleteDotsie, we have always heard about the food in England not being that good. Well, we found it to be delicious! ♥
DeleteThe food in the UK did have a very well deserved reputation for being not that good, but things have had a serious turn around and it is now very good. Sadly, the bad reputation is not going away as quickly as I'd like to see. I'm so happy your eating experiences were good ones, and you are helping spread the word, Martha Ellen.
DeleteDeb, we only had one pub we ate in that I didn't care for. The rest were quite delicious and offered great variety--We were quite impressed! ♥
DeletePerhaps one day soon, we can follow in your footsteps, Martha Ellen! We have also thought about visiting York. I'm sure that both Grayden (and his co-pilot) were able to breathe a bit easier driving on the main roads! I just love visiting medieval walled cities. The Treasurer's House is furnished very much like a castle. Can't wait for you to take us into the York Minster! Mmmm... Everything on the lunch menu sounds yummy. Thanks for letting us tag along on your visit to York! ♡Dawn@Petals.Paper.SimpleThymes
ReplyDeleteVisiting great walled cities have always been thrilling for us, Dawn. We did not spend a lot of time in York, but what time we had was just lovely! The main roads of England are really quite good and the drivers are courteous and do not speed! Oh, I hope you are planning your visit to England---how exciting! I want to go back as it's impossible to see everything on one visit! ♥
DeleteI have to smile as you describe that road! You haven't driven it arouand 5:00 p.m. on a Bank Holiday Monday afternoon which takes a whole hour to travel one mile which I ended up doing one August by accident!
ReplyDeleteJust look at those canopies on the beds! So beautiful.
I'll tell you something ~ Even though I can see examples every day, I will never ever tire of seeing any Gothic or pre~Renaissance cathedral in northern Europe. Nor will I tire of the simpler, earlier Norman parish churches that dot the countryside.
The food on that menu board sounds very good too. I'll have the quiche, I think.
Deb, you are so fortunate to live where you experience seeing all the history so far back than we have in America-- That's why we love visiting Europe! The churches alone are magnificent and so well preserved! ♥
DeleteYou have now arrived in MY favorite part of England, North Yorkshire, but you missed the BEST bits..the COUNTRYSIDE! The moors and sea coasts are spectacular! Truly God' Country! Then there is Wales, where my family came from...and the a West Midlands where my son, DIL and grandchildren live....enjoy the rest of your trip. I just got back!
ReplyDeleteLynda, our whole trip has been in the COUNTRYSIDE--Truly beautiful. If you look back at my posts I've shared the coastline and beauty of all that we could squeeze into our trip. ♥
DeletePS English food is delicious and the driving on the left is not hard at all....
ReplyDeleteHmmm...I'd consider the smoked salmon and asparagus. (I love asparagus!)
ReplyDeleteThose medieval gates are quite grand, as is the Treasurer's House. I am impressed with that large tapestry too, as well as the ornate wooden frames (canopies?) over the beds.
Cheryl, it was hard to choose what to have at this wonderful tearoom.
DeleteThe Treasurer's House was so grand. It's so nice that the property was left to the National Trust so folks down the ages can enjoy it. ♥
What a wonderful trip you experienced. The pictures are fantastic. Thanks for sharing and have a blessed day.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Joan. We enjoyed every minute of our trip. Have a great evening! ♥
DeleteWow, look at these beautiful old buildings in England. I've heard of York Minster before. I used to follow the happenings of Princess Di back in the day, and I would hear of the many shops and places she went to. The oval portraits are so pretty, and I love those red telephone booths - they are delightful!
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun and interesting trip you experienced.
Have a nice week ahead, Martha Ellen.
~Sheri
Sheri, the York Minster is wonderful! As well as all of York that we were able to visit. I must say again, England is delightful and full of charm!
DeleteThanks for sharing my excitement. Have an enjoyable week, Sheri. ♥
I am so pleased you went to York, it is my favourite city as it seems villagey in some parts. We are just under two hours away, hope to go Christmas shopping there many in November/October, the shops look beautiful and it is quieter then.
ReplyDeleteThe treasures house is beautiful, we have a phone box like that in our village.
Fondly Michelle
Michele, York was just lovely. How nice for you that you are only a couple of hours away. I can imagine the shops look lovely at Christmas time. We enjoyed our time there very much. Enjoy your day. ♥
DeleteI'll have the Yorkshire pork and leek casserole, if you please. I am glad the city of York did not get completely "sacked" in the 1200's! What an amazing cathedral. I would love to attend a church service in one of these ancient buildings, especially if it were in one of the small villages. The wall portraits always fascinate me as you can progress through history with the changes in the clothing worn. It looks like crewelwork on the bedspread in 3rd to bottom photo? You must have done a lot of research before your trip to narrow down your destinations. It just seems like it would take months to see it all!
ReplyDeleteJeri, York is a city I'm glad we didn't miss on this trip. It would be impossible to see everything in England in ten days. So we basically focused on the Lake District and then a few places on the way south to Brighton. I would love to go back and visit more of the thousands of sites that are still waiting for me to see! ♥
DeleteI'm partial to the smaller villages and cottages, but this must have been quite grand in person. I would love visiting every tea room along my route!
ReplyDeleteYork is the largest city we visited in England. We didn't have a lot of time there, but what we saw was amazing! York is an ancient city that has many tales to tell. I love the cathedrals of Europe and I very much wanted to see one of the largest in England and Northern Europe.♥
DeleteSweet Martha Ellen DEAREST!! You are ever the best EVER tour guide!! I LOVE everything that you are graciously sharing!!
ReplyDeleteThank you for all of these wonderful offerings of JOY remembered!!
You have a special talent for expression!! I adore you xxx ooo
Many Blessings and warmth, Linnie
Oh Linnie, you are so nice! Thank you for coming along with me on our adventure of Joy! Your encouragement means the world to me! Many blessings to you, sweetie! xoxo ♥
DeleteThis was wonderful. You can claim the Lake District, because I've already claimed Yorkshire. Lol I LOVE York! What an amazing place. Evensong at YorkMinster is amazing. Your photos are making me homesick. And I know you know what I mean.
ReplyDeleteI wish we could have attended Evensong at the York Minster, Judy. We'll have to go back to your Yorkshire and do that. ♥
