Good Times, Sad Times

Our family has a standing beach week that we have observed together for over 25 years.  We all gather together at the beach and enjoy what we consider one of life's greatest joys!  There are beach folks and then there are Beach Folks!  We fall in the later category.  I learned to love the beach as a very small child.  I never remember a year without going to the beach at least once in the summer.

I could never stay long enough on the shore; the tang of the untainted, fresh, and free sea air was like a cool quieting thought.  Helen Keller

As my children have grown into adults and have families of their own, they too love the beach.  It's a great time to be together.  The grands are also beach loving kids.  How wonderful it is to sit at the beach and enjoy one of God's gifts of the magnificent power and beauty of the ocean.

Our memories of the ocean will linger on, long after our footprints in the sand are gone.  Anonymous

We sadly had to leave the beach one day in the middle of the week to attend the funeral of Grayden's older brother.  It was not unexpected as he had Alzheimer's.

  3. My sincere condolences to Grayden and your family. Even when expected, it is a shock and great sadness. I know you will have many happy memories to look back on, and they really do help us through the sadness.
Such lovely photographs of you and your family on the beach. I live very near the beach, and have not been for ages now. I am more of a sit on the rocks, or the cliff tops, person these days, no longer being fond of crowds and sand in my food! All of the benefits, and surrounded by the coastal flowers too!

    1. Deb, thank you for your kind words. I've often wondered if I lived near the ocean, would I go with such frequency as I think I would? The majesty of the ocean leaves me in awe. It must be lovely to go whenever the mood strikes. ♥

  4. Heartfelt sympathy to Grayden and your whole family, Martha Ellen. Being together in the beauty of nature can be such a healing force. The ocean waves can begin to wash in peace and wash out sadness...

Oh, the happy memories made last week, too! Your family photos are wonderful and filled with joy! What a wonderful family tradition you and Grayden have carried on for so long! Do you always gather at the same beach each year? It must be so amazing to spend time at the ocean. We have beautiful beaches along Lake Michigan, but it's not quite the same feeling. I love walking along beaches and treasure the memories of beach walks in so many beautiful places!

    1. Thank you so much, Dawn, for your sweet thoughts. I have been going to the same beach since I was a child with my parents. We often go to other beaches, but the August retreat is always at the same beach at the same place. It's like going home. We have so much fun with all of our family together sharing happy times. Grayden and I love long walks on the beach---I can imagine Lake Michigan is lovely ---there is such beauty all around us! Have a lovely day, dear friend. xo ♥

  5. With Alzheimers I know your family has been grieving for some time, and it is yet another loss when someone passes on. I hope your memories of the good times will be a comfort at this time.

  6. I am so sorry to hear of the passing of your brother-in-law. I don't think one is ever feels ready to say good-bye to a loved one, no matter the circumstances, so I pray for your family as you walk the path of grief.

I am glad that you were able to make more lovely memories with your family at the sea. Your happy faces tell the tale.
