Baby it's Cold Outside!

I guess the major topic is the weather.  Kinda don't want to think about all the other horrible things that are going on in the world.  So I'll keep my head in the sand and talk about the weather.

Every year we usually get a stretch of frigid air.  It always takes us by surprise.  Sure we have our coats, hats, gloves and scarves to bundle up with. We definitely don't have the harsh winters that our neighbors to the north endure. I do love it when it snows, but it usually doesn't stay around too long.  Of course I remember winters to the contrary. Being an outdoor type of girl, I prefer taking our walks in the great outdoors.  There are limits to what temperatures make that comfortable for my husband and me.  Our preferred exercise is walking about two miles each day.  On very cold days we walk in our local mall.  Today was one of those days.

Being the sensitive type, I always feel for all of God's creatures out in this weather.  I am always in awe of how they are able to stay warm.  I watched this little fellow this morning as he was enjoying the sunshine and the last of the dried berries on the dogwood.

Do you feed the birds?  We have several feeders in our backyard. They love the suet feeder in the oak tree just outside our windows.  It's amazing how many different varieties come to visit.  There was a hawk calling outside this morning so everyone scurried away to their safe places.  I feel like this today as I contemplate all the news of yesterday. Finding my safe place.

Have you ever made homemade suet for the birds?  Here's a recipe--http://inhabitat.com/diy-suet-winter-birdfeeders/

If you have sons you probably are familiar with Richard Scarry's books.  My son and grandsons loved these stories-all about cars and trucks and things that go. In his books it was always fun to find goldbug.  Goldbug was a tiny little critter to look for on each page. Can you find the sparrow in the photo above?

"His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me."

  1. Oh, that sparrow is very well hid ~ but I spied him there. Yes, the weather is nasty wherever you look at the moment, but is always a fascinating subject for me. Would that I could take some of your cold for a week or so ~ the garden really needs a hard, freezing cold spell otherwise it won't work properly come the Spring. ~~~Deb

    1. I keep reminding myself that it is January, Deb. I do love the change of the seasons. Our garden is nice and frozen solid today--hoping for a great garden season ahead. ♥

  2. I'd say you've gotten the hang of your new camera already. That's a great photo you captured of the squirrel! It was only 9 degrees when we got up this morning. I would not have noticed the Sparrow if you hadn't mentioned it was there. :-) Yes, I'm amazed how creatures can stay warm in this weather. Yesterday the Robins were flying about, sitting in trees, and drinking from the small hole in our iced over garden pond where the bubbler was keeping a small hole open in the ice.

    1. Cathy, I felt very lucky to get that shot. He was just outside our front bay window. I'm sure your birds were very appreciative of the opening in your pond so they could have a drink. ♥
