Collections

I'm the type person who loves collecting.  The older I get, I realize this can be a problem!  Ha. Enjoying many different things, I find if you group like things together it is more pleasing to the eye.  Over the next few weeks I'd like to share with you how I display some of my collectibles.

I'd like to show you my Hummel collection. These lovely figurines were made in Germany and used the artwork of Berta Hummel as their inspiration. American soldiers, after WWII, stationed in West Germany, used to send these figurines home. Their popularity grew and when I was small I would see these figurines in some of my relatives' homes. When we go antiquing we often find them for a lot of money.  Twenty years ago I joined the Hummel club.  It started out at $35 a year. For each membership year they sent me a figurine and other information about Hummels. They increased the  membership price over the years and ended with around $50 per year until the company had financial issues.  I then decided to no longer keep up my membership.

My Mama had this shadow box in her living room for as long as I can remember. She told me that when we were small, if you had your children photographed on the photographer's horse, he would give you a shadow box.  I have no memory of having a photo taken on a horse, nor have I seen this photo. When I inherited this shadow box, I had a mirror put in it - and now I display my Hummels in it.  Little did I know that the mirror makes it difficult to photograph!  I find the artwork of Berta Hummel so charming.  The innocence of children is captured in these figurines.  They make me smile and that is a joyful thing.  Do you collect Hummels?  How do you display them?

  1. Hi Martha Ellen. Don't get me started on what I collect! Perhaps as I start to declutter I'll take photos and post them on my blog. I do have a few Hummels. Some are from my grandmother who had 6 brothers who served during WWII. I wonder if that is how she came by them! I bought a couple in the 1970's and have a music box with a painting of Hummel figures on the top. I love how you display yours. Mine are just on one of my bookshelves. Between the numerous windows and doors my house has and large pieces of furniture and bookcases, I have no wall space left for such a display.

    1. Cathy, I would love to see your collections. It is difficult to find room for my obsessions. I go through the decluttering process and have a hard time letting go. I applaud your resolution to do so. ♥

  2. I have stopped collecting. It was either that or buy a bigger house!
I love how you put mirrors in this so you can see the backs of the pieces without disturbing the lovely display ~~~Deb in Wales

    1. Deborah, I wish I could say that I've stopped collecting! We have a basement that unfortunately allows me to keep things that I should get rid of. My son says it's just a "marination holding space"! We then decide it's too much and then get rid of it! ♥
