November

How can it be November already?  October just made its entrance.  Does time seem to be passing quickly to you?  It certainly does for me.  I am reminded to enjoy every moment and spend my days well.  November certainly brings me back into our home as the cooler days are upon us.  Gardening chores take on a new slant.  There are many green grape tomatoes on the vines.  Without a frost I will let nature ripen them.  Leaf raking begins on a weekly basis.  It's always nice to make changes to our menus as the weather turns.  Making soups and stews and oven meals are welcome this time of the year.

Long cold nights mark November's return, grey rains fall, wind walks in the bronze oak leaves.

Gladys Taber

Rides in the country take on a different views.  Our leaves are now showing beautiful color.   It is a least a couple weeks later than usual.

Daylight savings time ends this weekend and darkness will come early.   It's nice to light candles to give our home a cozy feel.  Afghans draped over the chairs are put to use to warm us in the evenings.  A fire is always nice.  We have gas logs in the Florida room so we can have a fire quickly.  I must admit that a real fire is my preference,  but I do like the convenience of the gas logs.  We have two other fireplaces that we have fires in occasionally.

The Friendly Village dishes will now be put into service and the Thanksgiving decor will be added.  As we approach this month of gratitude I am reminded to count my blessings.  Among my many blessings, I count the friendships of you, dear readers.

  2. Your food sure looks inviting. I had our first fire in the fireplace a couple weeks ago, but it's been too warm lately to bother with it. I'm like you in that I prefer a real fire, but a gas fire should would be nice for just an hour of reading by before going to bed!

    1. Cathy we had the gas logs put into this fireplace many years ago. We were tired of the mess a real fire involves. It is quite convenient to use the gas logs for a short or a long time in the evenings or a chilly afternoon.
I've really enjoyed changing up the menus since the weather has gotten cooler. I hope you are enjoying the lovely weather. ♥

  3. Great photos especially the beautiful spider web one. Your meals look good enough to just dive into. I agree, this year seems to be flying by and everyone is saying the same thing. I wonder why this is?
I'm making the most of all these fine autumn days now before the winds and rain set in!

    1. Deb, I think I remember you don't care for spiders. I should have put a warning before that photo. I'm not wild about them as well, but I am amazed at the webs they weave.
I'm not sure why we feel the days are passing quickly. But I do know I want to make the most of them. I'm happy you are having good weather. It's been beautiful here as well. xoxo ♥

  4. Lovely post! And I love those Friendly village dishes. I had a friend who chose them when she married and I chose another similar JB pattern which isn't as popular, The Old Mill. The days are certainly shorter and today is our first real fall weather, it's been so warm. Time for soup! Have a good weekend.

    1. Dotsie, The Old Mill is a beautiful pattern. I have a serious dish obsession and I must say Johnson Brothers patterns are favorites of mine. I'm glad to hear you can finally make soup. It's time! Have a nice weekend. ♥

    1. Vee, we picked some pink grape tomatoes this afternoon. They're in the window sill to finish up their ripening. Thanksgiving always seems to get squeezed in between Halloween and Christmas so I'm hoping to enjoy this season of gratitude for as long as I can. Have a nice weekend. ♥

  6. Martha Ellen, what a special post of gratitude. Your home looks so cozy and welcoming for this month of November. I just washed my couch blanket, as we are having colder nights now. Your friendly village dishes are so pretty, and I love those little wooden dolls. I've seen them before while out shopping, and always want to get one for myself. Yes, soups are so delicious during the winter months. I am so grateful that I met you in blog land, Martha Ellen. You are a gem.

  7. While I love my REAL fireplace, I love the convenience of the gas logs, too. Ours are so realistic that people think it is a real wood fire.

Love the scents and sights and even the 'cold' sounds of this month--xo Diana

    1. Diana our gas logs look like a real wood fire as well, and are so simple to ignite. I must say that still, when we have a real fire in another one of our other fireplaces there is a difference. I hope your weekend is cozy! ♥

Such a cozy read tonight as I sit here wrapped in a warm throw blanket. : )
We share the same thoughts on November.
I look forward to the early darkness as we do indeed light candles and gather together by the television.
    Have a cozy evening. : )

  9. Lovely post full of gratitude. Rides in the country are lovely to take in the beauty of the countryside and animals along the way. I love a nice fire. We have both, a wood fireplace and a gas fireplace. The convenience of the gas is lovely. My husband always enjoys building a fire when the weather changes to cold. It does keep the house warm. I do love the Friendly Village dishes. I have some as well. Have a happy weekend.

  11. Yum the food looks so inviting. This has turned into a nicer November than usual for us. No killing frost yet and the color tour has last longer than normal. Your dishes are pretty and I love those turkey napkin rings. Your pilgrim nesting dolls are cute and unique. I don't think I've ever seen them with that kind of theme. Happy November!

    1. Thank you Liz. I made that turkey and napkin rings in the 70's when I was on a ceramic kick. I can't remember where I bought the nesting dolls, but they are probably from that same era. Our November feels more like October and our leaves are really beautiful now. Enjoy it all! ♥

  12. Martha Ellen, Yes, I have a local library, but never go to it. I usually just visit Barnes and Noble when I want to browse through the books. I am wondering, do you have one where you live? It's a delightful book store, with lots of interesting things to look at. Glad to hear your daughter is a book lover too. :)
