A Little of This and That

We've had a busy week starting with getting a new shower installed in our master bath.  Our home is 45 years old and the original tile wasn't holding up.  We're happy with the new shower and it certainly looks a lot better than the old tiles that I frankly could never keep clean.  There is always something that needs to be done when you own a home, isn't it?  We try to get a major project done each year to keep things up to date.  It's easier on the pocketbook that way for us.

The silkworm moth fell to his demise among the moss in the side yard.

Our daughter came for a short visit this week as well.  We enjoyed being with her and she took us all out to dinner to celebrate Father's Day while she was here.  Living so far apart makes it difficult for us all to get together, but we make the most of it when we can.

While she was here we were able to enjoy some time on the patio and a game of bocce ball.

Have you had your eyes checked lately?  I'm told we should do that every year, but we never do.  I guess we're at the age where we really should.  As we are aging I find there are many things we "should" do!  Soon we both need to take our prescriptions and get new glasses.

It doesn't take new glasses to see we need to do some edging in this bed.  The shrubbery needs a haircut as well.

We did get to the pruning of the shrubbery out front.  There are azaleas that we prune out there that must be done before the middle of June or we are sacrificing buds for next year.

Our son and grands are coming for a visit this weekend, so I've planned our menu and baked a pan of brownies.  I can now find a tablecloth easily without having to iron.

I've been ironing all the linens that have been in a pile on my laundry table downstairs.  Being one who doesn't particularly like ironing, I've been quite lazy about that job.  Recently, Cheryl at Thinking About Home, wrote a post about ironing her linens.  That made me do some serious thinking about getting that task done.  I'm so happy that chore is almost done.  I even got Grayden to give up a few shelves in the chifferobe to store my large collection of linens.  I used to have them in a few drawers in the guest room.  This was not a good place as there were too many tablecloths along with napkins.  Having done this job really makes me happy.  Thank you Cheryl for the inspiration.

Summer will be here soon and I can already tell by the flowers that are in pots that they now require frequent watering.  We have had quite a bit of rain this June so far--5.2 inches--unheard of for us!  It's been a lovely Spring and now we're looking forward to a happy Summer.  Do you have plans?  The beach?  The pool?  A vacation or staycation?  Whatever you have planned, I hope you find joy in your days. ♥

  1. Good for you getting the linens done...I also considered it reading Cheryl’s post and didn’t follow through. Oh me.

Sounds as if you have your summer’s work ahead. I know that you’ll save time for fun. I, too, have lots of projects for the summer.

    1. Vee, I even had to wash some of the linens again that were stored on the laundry table. I think that gives you an idea of how long they've been laying there! It does feel good to have tackled this job. Good luck with your projects. ♥

  2. Your house looks so pretty.. I hope you show more photos of the interior. You're a good girl to iron your linens. I just fold them right out of the drying and hope for the best. I am rather obsessed with tablecloths. We're just going to have a mellow Father's Day celebration on Sunday and I have a little surprise for Dayle. Have a great one with your family! ((hugs)), Teresa :-)

    1. Thank you, Teresa. I love old antique linen tablecloths and they must be ironed. It's fun when I find a new or antique tablecloth. It's such an easy way to brighten the table. Enjoy your Father's Day celebration! ♥

  3. It's a good feeling to finally be able to check off a job that has needed doing. And, your linens do look so nice on the shelves of the chifferobe. May and June have both been unseasonably hot and dry here, so we are wondering what July and August will be. The silkworm moth is so beautiful ~ love the colors.

    1. I do hope you get some moisture soon. We are usually in that predicament heading into summer. The weather patterns have certainly been unusual this year. Thank you for visiting and sending you wishes for a happy weekend. ♥

  5. What an incredibly beautiful creature the moth is, and it's a super photograph ~ such an unexpected beauty on the top of my blog reading list this morning!

Yes, it is very important to keep up to date on eye health! A thorough eye check up can give clues to other diseases such as cataract development, glaucoma, and even early indications of diabetes and high blood pressure that can remain undetected.

    1. Good morning Deb, or afternoon for you! Grayden found this moth and brought it to my attention. We have never seen one like him.
Being blessed with good eyes does make one take for granted it will always be the case. We will be more diligent in the future about our appointments. xoxo ♥

  6. There are always things to do in the house or garden …

It's always best to keep a check on our health, and this includes eye health too!
I have worn glasses since the age of eleven and regularly have my eyes checked.

Enjoy your summer, it's so hard to believe that it's now just past the middle of June!

    All the best Jan

    1. Jan, I couldn't agree with you more about checkups. I started wearing glasses in my forties- for reading. Then I progressed to wearing them all of the time as my eyes changed in my fifties.
I hope you are enjoying your lovely new home and garden. June is a wonderful time to enjoy outside. Thanks for stopping by. ♥

  7. I think summer has already made it to TN...we have been at 91-98 for several days and I just about melt. Love your patio! That is so cute looking. Glad you had your daughter visit. You said she lives away but you did not say where. I find it hard to just get to my daughters house and she is only an hour and 15 mins down the road. Sounds like you have been busy and all is well. A new bathroom will be really nice. I have work I need done here at the house but it is small work and it is so hard to find someone to do that sort of stuff. With all the building going on in Nashville these days they have enough large stuff to work on. I took a few days off in April and went to Fla. and I go to Calif next month to visit my son...that will be it for me.

    1. We've had very warm temperatures along with high humidity today, Pam. Summertime is here as well, even though it doesn't officially begin until the 21st.
Our daughter lives in New Hampshire, so it's a long ways from VA! I do miss her and love it when she visits.
It is hard to find contractors that will work on small jobs. Grayden is quite handy, but sometimes the larger jobs have to be hired out.
I hope you have a great trip to California. Sounds like fun. ♥

  8. Pffft, I have done some ironing this morning, love nicely ironed tablecloths but not the ironing.... You made a wonderful photo of the silkworm moth, never seen that one here. I don't go on vacation in summer but will go in Oct./Nov. and/or Jan./Febr., those are the boring months especially now I'm on my own. At the moment I'm busy trying to keep the dust as much as possible out of the house, I have contractors and painters already for 3 weeks working around the house, I hope they finish this week, and oooh it feels good because it looks so much better with all repairs done and a fresh paint.
    Regards, Janneke

    1. Janneke, your home improvement projects sound exciting. I understand having contractors and painters in your home can be disruptive but oh so nice when it's done!
Our vacations used to center around summer when the children were still in school. It's nice to be able to travel in the less busy months now.
Since I've written this post I've got another stack of ironing that I hope to get to this afternoon--we'll see! Have a lovely week. ♥

  9. I am amazed you have ironed all your table cloths. Mine are squished in a linen closet. i wish I had a place to hang them on hangars and then maybe they would stay wrinkle free, but folding mine seem to bring back the wrinkles I just ironed out. Are you going to post a photo of your new shower? Ours is in the same state and we are doing research on what to do. :-)

    1. After this weekend of family dinners, there are more tablecloths to be ironed! Hopefully I'll get out the ironing board today and tackle that before they get out of hand again. I just used a few that I ironed and just smoothed them out on the table. Not perfect, but still nice. I used to hang some in the linen closet, but they were quite hard to remove without sending several others to the floor.
We used Bath Fitters to do our shower. We are quite pleased. I'll go take a photo and put it on here. I'm so over tile! They did a bathroom for us downstairs four years ago and we have been pleased with the results. ♥

  10. You've been involved in a big project! We've had to replace our a/c unit, only 14 years old; installed when the house was built. We had no tile here; I was just like you....over trying to keep it clean, and never succeeding, no matter what I did. There are always projects to keep the home owner busy; doing outside chores while it's still cool is preferable. Problem is....we were at 84 degrees at 9:00 this morning! Stay cool! xoxo

    1. Oh Nellie, our central heat/ac is 23 years old--we have it checked at the change of each season and we know we are living on borrowed time. It's so hot and humid today --94 degrees now. I know you're glad to have that new ac now! I love the outdoors, but when it's like this you can find me indoors! xoxo ♥

  11. Your home is very lovely! I agree there always seems to be something to get done in a home :-) We have had temperatures in the 100's... not too fun, lol but the girls have been enjoying our pool as their summer vacation just started. Have a wonderful afternoon.

    Blessings,

    1. Jill, it sounds so hot where you are! I just heard on the news that our "feel like" temperature is 102 degrees. That's hot enough for me. I know your girls are loving the pool. When our children were small, we spent a lot of summer days at the pool. Enjoy your evening. ♥

  12. You were able to capture such a perfect picture of the moth. I need to trim some shrubs too- it’s looking shaggy around here! The new shower looks great. Tiles can be a pain to maintain so those acrylic units area great alternative. With my daughter now living in L.A. I understand the difficulty in getting together. I don’t love ironing either. I have some tablecloths that come out beatiful but most have fine wrinkles that I have to address. We’ve had some bouts of high temps but they’ve been brief. It gets harder to keep up with the watering when it gets so hot. It was 94º with a real feel of 101º here on Sunday. That’s too hot to do anything in! Thank goodness we’re back down to the low 80’s again!

    1. Liz, now you have a great place to go visit. California is a wonderful state with so much to see and do. The coastline around L.A. is magnificent.
We've had the most oppressive humidity lately, so I've been able to catch up on inside chores. All the ironing is finally done! We had a small storm last evening that did drop the temps by 20 degrees so that feels better, but will climb again today. Stay cool. ♥

  13. Old house has got a new shower. Tiles can also be changed. Beautiful picture of the moth. It would have been a wonderful time with your daughter. I don't iron too much of my clothes but i like to wear them.

  16. So much happening at your house, Martha Ellen! Thanks for letting us take a peek! I adore your collection of quilts so lovingly folded on top of the chifferobe. Just lovely! I do enjoy ironing our table linens. It almost feels like a meditation. However, I must iron them just before setting the table. Otherwise, they always get wrinkled again while they are being stored. Yes, it's really important to have regular eye exams! This Spring I picked out new frames. What fun to have a whole new look! Sending hugs, from our home to yours, dear one! ♡

    1. Dawn, I've made a promise to myself not to let my ironing get so overwhelming. It took me two days to really catch up. I know the tablecloths won't be perfect, but after smoothing them out on the table they will be fine.
Grayden and I both have new frames for our glasses and sunglasses like you! With recent adjustments we both are enjoying them. Sending you love and hugs, my sweet friend. ♥
