January Days at Home

Hello friends!  Can you believe that January has but one more week to enjoy.  The time seems to race by!  I must admit to not a lot of productivity around here.  Other than cooking and cleaning and taking our walks, there is no big project to report.

The birds always keep my attention.  This week we had three bluebirds fighting in the back garden.  I think it's a little early to be choosing a mate, but maybe they are!  Maybe they will decide to nest nearby.

We are lucky to have great viewing for watching the birds that visit us.

Rain is now falling outside these windows, but this weekend we had lovely sunshine streaming and creating interesting sunbeams.

The sunlight was dancing on the kitchen cabinets.  It reminded me of my late Aunt Jeanie.  When I was a child she would open a jar of Peter Pan peanut butter and Tinkerbell would fly about the room.  Honest, she did!

Grayden and I designed this stained glass piece to represent our two hearts.  I always smile when the sun shines through this piece.  We had a gentleman make it for us when we built this room.

This little squirrel was so cute eating on the front railing.  They all seem to be looking for food during these January days.  I'm not sure what he is eating.

But I am sure he is hoping this hawk will not be eating him!  I hope you are enjoying nature out your window during the cold days of January.

  1. January has been a strangely long month that seems over in a trice. I hope that soon you will be sharing pictures of baby Bluebirds. It is quite possible they are already fighting for a mate, as things in the garden are a little off kilter.

  2. Oh my!
I could look at your beautiful photos all day!
The birds must bring so much joy to your days.
    I love a bluebird.
And the one with the sunlight streaming?? Beautiful.
    Have a nice day.
    Thanks for the smiles.

  3. Yes, bird watching and squirrel watching are two of the points of interest. I have no bluebirds, though. Just a murder of crows with their incessant cawing and the fighting with the squirrels. Now that is entertaining. The window you and your Beloved designed is a beautiful focal point of your room.

    1. Vee, we had a couple of crows in our front yard on Saturday. I bet the murder of crows are fun to watch, though noisy!
I must photograph our other stained glass piece that is over the transom going into the breezeway. Unfortunately the light doesn't stream through it like our hearts one does.

  4. Ahh I do the same, watch the birds and squirrels every morning. I have an pileated woodpecker visiting which is always fun. That’s a lovely stained glass window piece you had made. Love it! I’m sad that bluebirds don’t take to my yard, but with my setting with woods they don’t seem interested. I have seen them once in a great while and I just burst with joy when I do! I’m so glad January is just about over, I’m just counting the days until spring!

    1. Liz, I love it when the pileated woodpeckers come. I do remember you have turkeys that like to peck around your garden. It's so neat watching nature. Thank you for your kind comments, my friend.

  5. Yes we have been doing a lot of nature watching through the window, makes for some fun moments. Love the stained glass hearts that you designed, stunning. Made me smile about Tinkerbell flying around the room, a good one to retell to my Grandaughter.

  6. I loved each and every photo.. but that fabulous stained glass window that you designed amazed me. Gorgeous. I made stained glass for years and love it. I also like the violets in your plant stand. We have a hummingbird feeder out of our kitchen window and I adore seeing the tiny birds feed there. ((hugs)), Teresa :-)

    1. Thank you for your kind comments, Teresa! We have another larger stained glass window above the transom in this room. It our above the breezeway and doesn't get the light the heart one does. I transplanted the violets this summer and they are now loving the sun of winter. You are so lucky to have hummingbirds year round. We only have the ruby throated ones in the summer. Have a lovely evening, friend.

  7. I have never seen a bluebird. What a treat. And your darling squirrel. I really adore your stained glass window -- how absolutely beautiful and meaningful. And Tinkerbell. Loved it all!

    1. Oh Jeanie, I hope a bluebird visits you one day. We don't see them often, so I am over the moon when I do! It's funny how certain things will trigger memories from the past. The sunbeams really bought back a flood of them from my Aunt Jeanie. Have a nice evening!

  8. The sun looks so nice and warm streaming in the window. And that is a cool picture of the sunlight dancing on the kitchen cabinets. Oh, it makes me happy to see all the birds in your yard, Martha Ellen. It's been so cold here living in the mountains, that I haven't seen many of them. I'm sure they will appear in the Spring. It was 9 degrees today, so cold, but will be in the 30's the rest of the week. That must have been a surprise when the Hawk showed up. And those squirrels.....not sure I like them hanging around my house. You are more tolerant of them haha. The stained glass window is a special sentiment to add to your home. Your January days at home are very nice, Martha Ellen. January seems to be a comforting month.

Have a pleasant week, dear friend.

    1. Oh Sheri, it is quite cold here, but not as cold as you! That must be a shock after living in Southern California. I know how lovely the mountains are there and I'm sure you are enjoying your new home. The squirrels are quite harmless. They just love to dig up flowers, etc. Lol.
I hope your week is cozy and warm, dear one.

  9. I love all of the sunny, cheery glimpses into your home! And how did we get to the end of January already? Time just keeps on marching, even in a pandemic, even as we stay at home a good bit. (But why am I not accomplishing so much more? Yikes!)

As we pulled into our parking space at church on Sunday, Bekah spied a pair of Eastern bluebirds in an adjacent property. I could hardly believe we were seeing them already, but it was a treat!

    1. I'm with you, my friend. Though I should be accomplishing more, my heart is not in that frame these days.
I'm so glad Bekah viewed the bluebirds! They are such a happy sight! Have a wonderful week, Cheryl!

  10. I will confess to a lack of productivity here as well. We just seem to be programmed to feel that we've accomplished something. Sometimes just holding ourselves together is accomplishment enough! We seem to have a variety of birds in our yard all during the year. Love watching them at the feeder! xoxo

  11. As I type this, here in the UK, it is late Friday evening and the coming weekend will be the last one in January! I have found that even in the midst of a pandemic the days pass by quite quickly. Keeping occupied is the key.

I enjoyed seeing your photographs and really like the stained glass hearts that you and Grayden designed, such a lovely idea.

Sending my good wishes across the miles.
    Stay safe and well.

    All the best Jan

  12. I love your bluebirds but we rarely get to see them at our feeders, except on the very rare occasion. That was such a cute story of your Aunt Jeanie and Tinkerbelle. She must have been a sweet lady. We are pretty much doing the same here. We just finished a peanut soup that I have been wanting to try. It was quite good, not what I thought it was going to turn out like but still tasty, and it is fun to try something new. That is a real pretty photo looking at your window with such a warm glow to it. What a pretty home you have and the dancing sunlight on your kitchen cabinets equally pretty. I love stained glass, have a few pieces myself but oh my, yours is not only beautiful but it has a lovely meaning. I enjoyed your hawk and squirrel photos and I hope they were just happy to hang out that day ;) A lovely series of photos Martha Ellen, so uplifting. We will be getting our first heavy snow starting at 3.00 a.m. I am wondering if you will too. A big thank you from me for this lovely post, and a wish that your weekend and week ahead will be a great one.

    1. Denise, seeing the bluebirds here is a rare sight as well! Your peanut soup sounds delicious. Have you had it in Colonial Williamsburg? They really make the best at their taverns. I have very fond memories of my Aunt Jeanie. She was the "fun" aunt. Kind of crazy at times, but to a child so much fun! It's so nice to have you visit and leave such sweet comments. We are getting snow! I love it as it all looks so pretty at this stage. Of course, I don't have to go anywhere or even shovel. I leave the shoveling up to Grayden and our grandson! Enjoy a cozy day, my friend, and have a great week ahead as well!

    2. I saw the recipe online at a tavern in Colonial Williamsburg, at the King's Tavern. I would love to go there one day. I love Williamsburg. My sister-in-law lived there a few years ago and always had gatherings of the family. We have been visiting the town ever since I got married as my in-laws only lived about an hour away. The last time was meeting up with Gregg's brother and his wife and having lunch at one of the restaurants. I hope it won't be too long before we can go there again. I like the sound of your Aunt Jeanie. If she was a little eccentric she was never boring and always fun, I had a few relatives like that back in the day and I adored them :) Always enjoy visiting Martha Ellen and I feel the same way about yours. Have a wonderful weekend!

  13. The bluebirds are lovely. Watching the birds is a favorite past time. I always keep the bird feeder full. Sometime the squirrels get into it. The stained glass is lovely, how precious to design that together.
