September Visit to the Ocean

It's no secret how much we love spending time by the ocean.  Whether it's gazing at its majesty on the sand sitting in our beach chairs or riding in a vessel, we are happy to experience both!  When we were younger you could find us riding waves and swimming in any form of water we could find.  Now that we're older we still find water exciting, especially the ocean.  We spent a week at our favorite spot a couple of weeks ago enjoying the beautiful weather and all the relaxation the days brought after long walks.

It's never tiring to open the drapes and find this beautiful sunrise greeting a new day!

Sunrise over the Atlantic can be all I need to get up early to view.  With the sun brightening up our room, it's not hard to get outside and experience a lovely walk.

This week we had the opportunity to take a ride on a schooner on the Elizabeth River in Norfolk.  It was quite an experience to sail the flat waters of the river surrounding Waterside.

The American Rover is a three masted topsail schooner that is known as Norfolk's own tall ship.

As we began our sunset cruise, the crew hoisted the sails and we were underway touring the waters that are home to shipbuilding companies for the United States Navy.

As the sun was retreating, we were invited to enjoy a lovely barbeque dinner below deck.

We then continued sailing enjoying the lovely warmth of the September evening.

Spending an evening on the American Rover was a lovely addition to our time together.

  4. I'm not one for including people in my land, or sea, scapes, often stood for ages waiting for the view to clear, but oh! sometimes you just need one, small person in an image for scale. Look at the scale in your first photo. It was lovely to see a photo of Waterside too. I've spent many happy hours mooching about, and wonder how it's changed. There used to be an amazing hat shop. Funny how something odd like a hat shop remains in my memory. I recall one amazing Fourth of July night there, with incredible fireworks, The Boss booming out over the sound system, and thousands upon thousands belting out the lyrics with him! Glad you got in another lovely time at the beach before Winter is upon us, although I love Winter at the beach a lot. xoxo

    1. Deb, I agree that scale is more defined when you have a focal point. I took so many photos that morning without the walker, but then when he came along it made it more magical.
That's so neat to hear you know Waterside! I so enjoyed hearing about your Fourth of July celebration. Waterside has had its ups and downs, but appears to be doing okay considering the economy. We didn't spend any time browsing about considering the pandemic.
The beach is wonderful in every season. Seeing snow on the oceanfront is one of my favorite memories there! xoxo

  7. I love being by water, no matter where it is, but there is a power and energy to the ocean by its vastness that enthralls me. The boats are always fascinating -- so many kinds. And of course the weather can be a cruel or benign mistress. Beautiful photos, all of them. I love that you can see this!

  9. Wonderful photos, Marth Ellen! I felt like I was sailing along with your and your husband. We have taken a few schooner trips over the years and they are always so pleasurable. One was in Key West to watch the sunset--it was so magical down there. For most of my life I lived close to the Atlantic Ocean and I do miss it at times.

  10. Martha Ellen, you have a longing for the ocean just as Jess does. What a wonderful trip you had visiting the ocean, and the sunrise greeting you that day was so pretty. The barbecue dinner on deck sounds delicious. This was a lovely cruise for the end of the Summer, and now my favorite season has begun, Autumn. I know how much you love Fall too. : )
