March Days

As when all seasons change, the former season hangs on.  Though Spring doesn't officially begin until March 20,  she has been knocking at our door since February.  Winter doesn't give up easy.  Our daily walks are as varied as the weather.  Going from heavy winter gear to lighter sweaters and jackets tell us Spring is coming!

Our Susan Branch calendar hangs on the side of our refrigerator in the kitchen.  March words are particularly beautiful and so meaningful.

In the garden we have been busy doing our winter cleanup.  The last of the leaves that hang onto the oaks began falling as the new leaves push them away.  New life is emerging everywhere.

When our temperatures dropped to 17degrees and snow fell I knew that would be the end of those daffodils that are blooming.

Have you noticed the change of sunbeams as they shine in your home?  I really have as the angles of the sun change heading toward Spring.

The sun shining through our bedroom curtains caught my attention as well as the sun shining in the living room.

Change comes in subtle ways when Spring makes her entrance.

Another sign that Spring is coming is when the Eastern Bluebird visits us!  It was thrilling to have him stay long enough to take his photograph.  They are always on high alert and don't linger too long at the suet.  We have an old bluebird box on one of our trees, but sadly they have never found it suitable for nesting.  Some folks offer them meal worms, but we have not.

What signs of Spring have you seen around your home?  Are the trees beginning to bud along with snowdrops or crocus or daffodils?  I know some of you are still snow covered, but Spring will come in all of its glory.  Look for her!

  1. Your daffodils are wonderful! It amazes me that you have been able to do clean-up in the garden. I am watching for her. I know she'll be here soon. She never arrives early. Have a wonderful week!

    1. We have been in high cleanup mode as we had a mulch delivery yesterday, Vee. Your Spring blooms will come when our's is long gone! Enjoy your week!

  2. What a lovely thing to wake up to this morning. It's the day the Easter grocery delivery slots release at 6:00 a.m. and I've been in the scramble for a slot with success achieving my preferred day and time! Now, dawn has broken and daylight peeps in those chinks around the curtains. Soon it will arrive with you, my friend, bringing whispers from Wales. It's still quite wintry here, most days call for the heavier coat and boots, but signs of Spring are upon us too. Waving from Across the Pond, Deb in Wales xoxo

    1. Deb, I do hope you have the wanted slots for your groceries. I love thinking of whispers from Wales. Daylight savings time has come and we are closer in time to you. Today our temperatures are to be close to 70! Surely Spring and not Summer will be here soon. Have a happy day! xoxo

  3. A daffodil emerging through the soil here and there and the rhubarb starting to unfurl. Off course the grass growing a little too is a sure sign of Spring.

  4. I love your sunbeam photos. Lizzie seems to be a master at finding the sun puddles. And I love your daffs. A real sign of spring.

  5. Yes, new life is emerging in the trees and my hyacinths are blooming. The daffodils have been picked except for a few by our Genevieve. She loves flowers inside. What a pretty little bird. Love those bluebirds. I enjoy watching the finches in the summer ripping the inside of the flowers apart for seed, so cute.

    1. Nature is so interesting to watch, isn't it? I adore observing the changes that happen when the seasons change. Genevieve is my kind of girl--I love bringing blossoms inside to enjoy. Have a nice afternoon, Betsy!

  7. You are quite a dedicated gardener! Love those sunlight pictures. Neighbors have bluebird houses, and sometimes the birds make it our direction to perch on a favorite spot. I have been very busy with refilling the vibrant feeder! The birds just won’t leave it alone! We had five+ inches of snow on Saturday! It quickly disappeared with sunshine and warming temperatures. Spring is on the way!

    1. Nellie, I do love gardening. As you are well aware Spring is quite labor intensive. You really were hit with a lot of snow! I know what you mean about filling the feeder. I know your feathered friends love you! Have a lovely evening.

  8. Oh Martha Ellen, the sun shining through in your living room is so lovely, and it looks like it gave some warmth in the house too. Your mantel looks nice also. The snow on your ground outside is pretty, and I am one who never tires of seeing the snow. But those daffodils are cheerful, aren't they? They look wonderful all bunched up in your pretty vase. The Susan Branch calendar is delightful. And that sweet Eastern Bluebird is the most charming visitor of all. Well, our snow has melted, but it rained today, and I think Spring here will take its time to arrive, although those dear hummingbirds are already starting to come around.

It's always a pleasure to visit with you and see your sweet posts. They make me smile.

    1. Thank you so much, Denise. I have followed Susan Branch for many years. Her artwork and her writing is quite inspirational to me and many others. She is a fellow anglophile and her book "A Fine Romance" gave us the inspiration to follow our dream of traveling to England on the Queen Mary 2. I always have her calendar in my kitchen. As you probably know it is full of wonderful quotes and beautiful artwork.
Have a lovely rest of your week!

  10. Ooooo . . . I love both photos of the light coming into your house! Beautiful! Pictures of streaming light always speak to me. You have a way with words too, as you perfectly described the change of seasons there in your opening. It's a give and take, isn't it? Even so, I don't really mind that. I am eager for spring and its color, but I am not ready to be hot yet (am I ever?!), so I don't mind the lingering cooler temps.

Enough rambling. Happy Spring to you! That lovely little pitcher of daffodils is perfection!

  14. Lovely to see all of your photographs here and what beautiful colouring the Eastern Bluebird has.
We've been fortunate to have some lovely spring-like weather and the daffodils are well in bloom. Our neighbour has a beautiful magnolia tree which is also blooming.
Spring is one of my favourite seasons.

    Wishing you happy days ahead.

    All the best Jan

  15. Lovely photos, Martha Ellen! Especially the shadow ones. A few years ago I finally saw 2 bluebirds from my living room window. They were in my St. Francis garden. My neighbor in the cabin saw them all the time in her yard! Just the other day I saw them in my St. Francis garden again. Then, lo and behold, one of them visited my deck outside my writing room! They are such beautiful birds, along with my resident cardinals. I wanted to let you know that my daffodils survived our recent 22 degree temperatures....even the snow! Hopefully, now that it's April we won't see the return of winter for many many months!

    1. Happy April, Cathy. I'm so happy to hear about your lovely birds in your St. Francis garden. Daffodils have really had a swing of temperatures to deal with this Spring! Nice to hear yours have survived the ups and downs. A good analogy for us too.
