June Bloomers and Father's Day

It's always nice to see the daylilies bloom and give color to our yard.  Spring is always beautiful, but there is a lull in blooms around our place.  Our front has the most sun so that's where the daylilies are.   Let's look at some of the flowers that cheer our days.

We also had a visitor last week after a rain storm.

My sister's mother-in-law calls the lilies above ditch lilies.  Have you heard this?  It's true they grow in a lot of ditches in Virginia.

On Father's Day we all celebrated at Kabuto's Japanese Restuarant in Richmond.  It is such a fun place to have dinner and the grands love it there. Our son Grady and his Dad are two wonderful fathers of which I'm so proud.

Left to right. Miles, Grayden, Alex, Grady, Samuel

At Kabuto's they cook dinner on a grill in front of you and put on a show while doing it.  The boys love to watch the chef catch food on fire.  Then they indulge in "catching food" as the chef tosses it their way.  It's definitely not what we do at the table at home, but great fun out.

We really miss our daughter and son-in-law especially when there are celebrations. They live in New Hampshire.  Our son-in-law Peter is a wonderful father to Samuel and we wished he were here to celebrate with us.

Our daughter swam her first open water swim on Saturday.  It was a two mile swim.  Peter was her pilot in a kayak.  Samuel said they call the person in a kayak the YAKER--Too funny!  We're so proud of Noel for reaching this goal!

  1. You have some lovely colors in your Daylilies. Your Father's Day celebration sounds like it was lots of fun. Do the boys ever try to reenact their dining experience at home? Too tempting!

    1. Cathy, I don't think they would try that at home. They are way too smart for that! ♥

  2. Now that's the color I'm hoping for...yes, we call them ditch lilies and I have a lot right in front of the house (no ditch, though). My friend gave me clumps of them from her childhood home in Pennsylvania. I was so honored by her gift that I put them in the front. A lot of people have laughed at me and I don't care. I like them and I like the color orange and it goes well with the shade of green on the house so I'm happy for that four weeks that they are blooming. I have some Stella d'Oros that are just starting. The spiderwort is blooming. That's it so far.

What a great bunch of guys in that photo! They all look very happy. The restaurant experience sounds just like something that men and boys would enjoy. (I think I might, too.)

Your daughter's accomplishment is amazing! I can't even imagine.

    1. Vee, it won't be long and you will be enjoying that color also! I love my ditch lilies--Mine are out in the front also--who cares? I love having flowers in our yard that were gifts from friends. It's how I got started gardening. ♥

  3. The restaurant does sound like a fun place to eat and watch the show. A great photo of the men in your life that are local. Hope your week is off to a good start.

  4. My daylilies are really blooming too. Do you know the name of the one in the bigger picture? I have a similar one, but I don't think that mine is a double. I also have the apricot looking one, and some yellow ones too. I really like the doubles.
I swam in the Chesapeake Bay yesterday, BUT not two miles! WOW! I decided not to swim near the oceanfront, because bull sharks were seen Saturday afternoon.
Stay cool today! Our poor flowers.

    1. Margot, the double orange daylily is called Kwanzo. A fellow worker of my husband gave it to me years ago. They have really increased over the years. Your daylilies sound beautiful.
You are so lucky to have a great place to swim. I hope you don't swim alone. Be careful. It's supposed to be 100 today so I'll probably be inside. ♥

  5. Such a colorful way to celebrate Father's Day, Martha Ellen! The wonderful men in your life must have really enjoyed the entertaining dinner! Your daylilies are beautiful. Our backyard is surrounded by orange daylilies. It's a glorious sea of orange every year, just in time for Father's Day! We have a patch of yellow daylilies near the front porch and several Stella d'Oro daylilies sprinkled throughout the garden. After terrible storms yesterday, with heartbreaking, devastating tornadoes one hour south of us, today we have sunshine and blue skies. I just love the 'joy' in your posts, Martha Ellen, both at home and on your adventures! Stay cool today!

    1. Dawn, It's already quite hot here in Va and storms are predicted our way. I'm heartbroken when I hear of all the devastation that tornados and strong storms bring. I'm picturing your lovely sea of orange and know it's beautiful. Wishing you a wonderful, safe and cool day! ♥

  6. Wonderful family pictures. That is what my grandmother always called the tiger lilies, too- ditch lilies. They grew all over the ditches in PA where I grew up.
Congrats to the swimmer! Wonder where the Yaker term comes from? lol kayak on a lake? xo Diana

    1. Diana, thank you for your kind words. I hope you are staying cool today and that you have that cute baby in the laundry basket nearby.
The pilot on the kayak is the Yaker--Ha Ha. ♥

  7. Yes, we too have the field lilies, islands and islands them. So many in the meadow, that James just mows around them, as they are congregated in huge swaths, spread hither and thither. I used to dislike orange flowers, but it just wouldn't be summer without those magnificent 6 foot ladies blowing in the breeze. But still, I WISH the were pink...

  8. Your day lilies are beautiful. I have quite a few but only the orange ones are blooming so far. Here in New England, many people call the orange ones ditch lilies. Yes…they may grow along side the roads in the ditches but I think they are too pretty to be called that. :)

    1. Hi Karen, thank you for visiting. I feel the same way about the lilies that grow in ditches--too pretty to be called a name such as that! I'll come by to visit soon. ♥
