Blizzard of January 2016

I'm hoping all you friends that endured the blizzard, Jonas, are safe and well as we all recover from our storm.  There have been various accumulations recorded up and down the east coast.  As well as we can tell, we have at least 20 inches of snow.  There are drifts that measure much more than that!  As our record I wanted to post a few photos for us.  If you are sick of looking at snow you are welcome to move on to another blog.

The storm began around 12:30 pm Friday with just light snow falling.  Within an hour the snow began in earnest!  In a couple of hours we had a snow covered patio.

Snow continued through the evening and into Saturday and by nightfall we really had some snow!

The sun was shining so lovely on the fresh fallen snow this morning!

During the storm the snow was so beautiful, but visibility was limited.

Before the storm we made sure the feeders were full of seed for the birds.

The storm was passing to the north and the full wolf moon was beginning to show her beautiful face!

The boxwoods are feeling the weight of the snow, even though it was a very dry powdery one!

Whose woods these are I think I know.
His house is in the village, though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.

My little horse must think it queer
To stop without a farmhouse near
Between the woods and frozen lake
The darkest evening of the year.

He gives his harness bells a shake
To ask if there is some mistake.
The only other sound's the sweep
Of easy wind and downy flake.

The woods are lovely, dark, and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.

Stopping By Woods On A Snowy Evening

Robert Frost

There is something about a snowstorm that brings us into the quiet of our homes.  Simple pleasures to quiet our thoughts and our minds.

  1. I'm glad you enjoyed the storm and stayed safe. The photos are beautiful. There's nothing like fresh fallen snow! Now I guess you will wait for it to melt. Though with cold temperatures that may take awhile.

    1. Dotsie, I've always loved the snow. I know it's a problem for those that have to go out. Those that have to shovel it may not have the same love as I. ♥

  2. There is something about a blanket of snow that is calming and peaceful. Of course, reality soon enters the picture, and the clearing away must begin.:( I love that Robert Frost poem! Stay warm and cozy!

    1. Nellie, I love the snow. Maybe it's because we don't get it very often! Yes, the clearing has begun. Enjoy your evening! ♥

  3. You have to document such a storm! When was the last time you saw that much snow? Hopefully, it'll all melt soon and then life can get back to normal. Your world sure looks pretty wearing white. You have some great captures. The cardinals who have you to thank for their meals and those gorgeous icicles against the blue sky. Gorgeous.

    1. Vee, I think this is the most snow we have ever had in this home of 42 years. I do remember an 18 inch snow when the children were small. Did you get any? Have a great evening watching Downton Abbey! ♥

  4. I couldn't get out of the house last night to get a clear shot of the moon! So very nice to see it here. I just did my post with lots of snow pictures. Our shared readers will indeed get their fill of snow especially if they have their own outside their window. I love Frost's poem, too, and will always remember my shock when the museum docent told us he wrote it one hot July morning after staying up all night working on another poem.

    1. Cathy, I took the photo of the moon from the inside as I couldn't go outside last evening. We went to Robert Frost's home as well, in New Hampshire, but I didn't hear that tidbit! Interesting! I'll be stopping by to see your big snow!! ♥

  7. I lived in NYC most my life and went through many blizzards, but this one seems to have broken records everywhere! Now I'm in Colorado and it snows a lot but melts quickly. Only the high mountains gets 2-3 feet of snow at a time, but they are well prepared for it. I'm glad you fed the birds--those poor fellows must have been so thankful!

  11. You've been busy building a flock of sheep! I love those hardy little cardinals, giving us a splash of color in the midst of pure white fluff. It is so lovely to look at.... and then , after I've slipped on the ice a few times and struggled to make it up to the barn in the stuff, I just want it GONE!

    1. Jeri, our snow is melting fast! Our driveway is clear as is our road out front. The high tempereatures in the 50's the last couple of days is sure to cause a muddy mess! I'm sorry you have slipped on the ice! That ice so dangerous. We're lucky not to have that! ♥

  15. Oh Martha Ellen, your pictures made my heart sing! I'm never get too tired of looking at pictures of the snow because I don't get a chance to see it here unless we go up in the mountains, about an hour away. I heard of all the blizzards going on right now. 20 inches of snow, wow. I hope you are staying warm inside. And maybe playing a little outside. :) And you got a lovely picture of the red cardinal. Martha Ellen, do you know that it's my dream to see the red cardinal someday? I don't see them here in California. I'm wondering if they live in colder climates?

These are truly wonderful pictures today. Watch out for those icicles. I heard they can be dangerous if they fall because they're so sharp. A happy day to you. I must come back and see this post again. :)

    1. Sheri, I do hope you see a cardinal in person one day! They are my favorites. The really red one is the male and the more dull one is the female. They are always paired with their mates! Cardinals don't seem to live out west, I noticed. The icicles are gone now, but the snow is still here. We've had warmer temps this week, but it's cooler now. Thank you for your sweet note! ♥

  16. Love successive photos of the same spot. :-)

Glad you were well, and that you got to see the Full Wolf Moon. :-)

We were just above the storm, so we didn't get any snow.

But I think of our poor plants, without the usual blanket of snow, this winter. Hope they make it.

    Gentle hugs...
