Summer Begins

Summer officially begins today.  Here in Virginia we  have felt the temperatures rise gradually and it has felt like summer for a while now.  Severe thunderstorms occurred  last week and many found themselves without electricity.  The  Richmond area was particularly hit hard.  Our son was in that unfortunate group.  This time of year we rely on our air conditioners to take away some of the discomfort of heat and humidity.  Our two youngest grandchildren's last day of school was last Friday.  Because of power outages the whole county had to cancel the last day of classes.  This was a memorable end of the year for them!

Our son had invited us for a cook-out for Father's Day.  As of Saturday he still had no power, but it was restored by the evening.  Do you experience frequent power outages?  We have been quite fortunate through the years.  We have underground power lines which I'm sure is a reason for that.  On our way to Richmond we saw many downed trees and many power trucks from out of state to aid in the recovery process.

Our son made a feast for his Daddy.  Grayden loves salmon, so he smoked the most delicious salmon in his smoker.  He also grilled chicken wings and bratwurst.  Corn on the cob and green beans rounded out the meal.  I made brownies that the boys devoured.  We took down our old croquet set that the children used to play with when they were little.

Before dinner we all played Blokus while Grady grilled the meal and after dinner we set up the croquet game.

It was a wonderful day honoring two great Dads!

  1. OT but, I see a lovely screened in porch there! :-))))

Not too many outages, here. Nearly 50 years ago, we built this home. The small home we had before that, used to have outages a lot. In that neighborhood, we kidded that our transformer was held together with scotch tape! Yish!!!

Happy Summer Solstice and Full Strawberry Moon!

    1. Tessa, our son has a great screened in porch. I hope the moon is visible to you this evening as last evening it was lovely. ♥

  2. Yes, we have had a few power outages too. It's annoying, but it just makes me appreciate when things do go back on again, and I try to get creative doing other things. It sounds like you had a wonderful Father's Day with delicious food. Croquet sounds fun. So glad the kids enjoyed themselves. Love that rabbit picture, and the pretty roses.

Have a wonderful week, Martha Ellen.

    1. Thank you, Sheri. I think we get used to our creature comforts and surely miss them when they are unavailable. Have a great week! ♥

  3. We've only had maybe two outages that have last a day or more in the 35 years we've been here. It looks like you had a wonderful Father's Day with your family!

  4. What a wonderful celebration, Martha Ellen! So happy that it all worked out. I can see the happiness in both special dads! We have had many, many power outages in our town over the years. Overhead power wires and huge, old trees are always worrisome in bad storms! We are expecting severe storms tomorrow.

Your garden looks just lovely, Martha Ellen! I celebrated the solstice with a whole day in the garden. What a treat! The Full Strawberry Moon was gorgeous last night over the Midwest. A perfect ending to a lovely day and a wonderful welcome to summertime! Wishing you happy summer days! ♡Dawn@Petals.Paper.SimpleThymes

    1. Dawn, when those big old trees fall they cause quite a bit of damage. A huge tree fell on Grady's neighbor's home, but they were lucky it did not pierce the roof!
The Strawberry Moon was so lovely last evening. We walked outside about 10 pm and it was so bright. I tried to get a good photo, but with no luck. I'm still working on my photography skills. It was raining a little on our walk this morning so I doubt I'll get a photo tonight. Have a wonderful summer, dear one. ♥

  5. What a beautiful backyard. And croquet sounds like such fun. Our croquet set got lost in a move 10 years ago, and it has never been replaced.

Living in southwest Idaho, we almost never get thunderstorms. When we lived in Florida (prior to 2000), we got them all the time, and we were used to power outages. I can't tell you the last time our power went off here.

Your flowers are beautiful, and that little bunny is adorable. I have been on a bunny kick lately, have even though about decorating my kitchen in a bunny theme.

    Happy day to you,
    Patti

    1. Patti, I can imagine your weather is quite different since you moved to Idaho. Our son's backyard is a great place for the boys to play, but I'll have to say a little challenging for croquet as there are a few holes to dodge.
I love bunnies as well. I'd love to see a bunny themed kitchen! Have a wonderful day! ♥

  6. Sounds like you had a great Father's Day get together. I truly hate loosing power but at least in the summer you won't freeze like what can happen in the winter. We're lucky that rarely loose power.

    1. Good point, Liz. We rarely lose power as well. On our walks we go through a neighborhood that has overhead power lines. The power company regularly trims the trees that run under them. Have a wonderful week. ♥

  7. Looks like a wonderful day! Bring out the crochet. Did the boys like it? Our power lines are under ground but we lost power twice last week in the storms. Seemed unusual to us. Maybe even stranger is my new relationship to the power company where they texted me at 2 am to let me know the power was back on. I had already figured it out! But it's nice they are doing their job.

    1. The boys did like croquet, Dotsie. The youngest grand loves games and was really into it! How interesting the power company texted you at 2am--Wow. We're expecting storms this evening, but hopefully no power outages.

  8. HI Martha! Oh, what a wonderful Father's day y'all had! Love the snaps of all the guys! Our power doesn't go out much in the summer but the winter months are scary. We're fortunate as the previous owners of our house put in a very nice generator in the basement just in case! ;)
Thanks for popping in to see me.
    be a sweetie,
    Shelia ;)

  11. It looks like your family had a wonderful Father's day, Martha! My husband and I were in NYC last week--we had a friend's son wedding to attend and then we went sightseeing a little and spent time with family and friends. We are celebrating a belated Fathers Day with our son and son-in-law this weekend.
Our power lines are also underground and so far in the three and a half years we've lived here we have not lost power. It seems there have been so many powerful storms this year--I hope the summer weather will be calmer soon!

  14. That feast sounds scrumptuous! YUM!

Glad the day was fun for them both.

I LOVED playing croquet when I was little - was the best in the neighborhood...making up for being the worst at every other sport play, haha.

Have a safe and fun Independence Day!
