Waiting for Spring

This year more than ever, I've anxiously awaited for Spring to arrive.  Even though it's not been a particularly bad winter, I'm ready to play in the garden.

For the first time ever, we have a pair of bluebirds in our garden.  It's such a happy sight to see them flitting about eating and preparing to build a home together!

Here is the couple taking turns at the suet feeder.

It's quite surprising to see them up so close to our home.

Inside I've added a shamrock banner to the kitchen window.

I've never had a pot of shamrocks.  My new blog friend Teresa has the most lovely ones in green and purple.  We looked all over for them and now they are everywhere.  I understand they make great houseplants, so we'll see.

This is my first time making Irish Soda bread in my Mama's cast iron pan.  It was yummy with tea.  I used This recipe made with raisins as my family is not a fan of caraway seeds.

The side garden was freshened up with the mulched oak tree chips that was removed last year.  We've had several bouquets of daffodils that always say Spring to me.

The hellebores are blooming quite profusely in our beds.  Their sweet little nodding heads remind me that Spring is coming even on the last of cold winter days.

Another reminder that Spring is coming is when I can hang the sheets outside.  When we had a tree removed last year, I lost my clothesline.  No fancy line here, just clothesline strung between two trees.  It makes me happy to hang our linens outside!  Today is so windy I had to use extra clothespins.

We are excited to have our daughter come on the train tomorrow for a visit.  We'll also be celebrating our grandson's fifteenth birthday.  Sending you happy days my friends. ♥

  1. Those bluebirds are sweet, Martha Ellen. I really like the picture of its wings spread. The Shamrock banner looks cute in your kitchen window, and I love those Shamrock plants. I hope they do well. Oh, you made homemade bread, how wonderful. I never thought of putting raisins in it, that sounds Yummy. I haven't seen a clothesline in so long, how delightful.

Spring is sure popping up in your area. It's coming here too, as I see the Pink blossom trees gracing all the streets in my town. But it's been raining all week, so we'll have to wait a bit.

Happy St. Patrick's Day weekend, Martha Ellen. Your posts warm my heart.

    1. Sheri, we have lived in our home for 45 years and have never seen bluebirds in our yard. They are so sweet and I hope they are nesting nearby.
Irish Soda bread is so easy to make I hope you give it a try.
We need rain here again, but I'm sure enjoying the sunshine we are having today. I bet your flowering trees are lovely. Have a great weekend, my friend. I appreciate your kind comments. ♥

  2. How lucky you are to have such pretty birds visit your yard! We've never had them here but I know they are in Oregon as my friend's husband checks bluebird nests for an organization. Your garden is so tidy! Ours is wild as a March Hare.. an old farm place. ((hugs)), Teresa :-)

    1. Teresa, I only photographed the tidy side garden. The rest of them are needing attention. When it warms up, I'll be out tending to them. We so enjoy the birds that visit us. Seeing bluebirds really thrilled us. ♥

    1. Thank you for your sweet comments, Zaa. Anticipating spring is a great time to plan for our gardens. You are fortunate to have snow cover for all the wonderful moisture it's giving to the earth. Hopefully rain will fall soon as it's dry again here. Have a happy day! ♥

  5. Erin Go Bragh {at least for today!} my friend! As you know, Saint Patrick was a great friend of Wales' own patron saint, David. Today, all the St David's Day events that were cancelled two weeks ago in our village due to bad weather are taking place, so we are celebrating both saints today.

I love Irish Soda Bread as it's so quick, and delicious spread with butter, but I've never put anything in it ~ yet!

    Love your Shamrock bunting.

    1. Happy St. Patrick's and St. David's Day to you, dear Deb! I can only imagine the celebrations that are happening in your village.
I made another loaf of Irish Soda Bread last evening as our daughter is coming today. I just wish I had some of your wonderful butter to go along with it! The Irish butter I buy here is not the same as your's!
Have a nice day, my friend! xoxo ♥

  6. We too are enjoying the birds at the feeders and nearby trees, but I don't seem to be able to photograph them well. Yours are lovely. And I like your clover banner and plant! Most of all how wonderful to see your sheets on the line. I have too many trees to hang much out but I used to love to hang the linens out. There's nothing like the scent of clean, fresh outdoor-hung sheets on the bed!

  7. I always get excited to see Blue Birds. Their color is so gorgeous. I don’t thin I’ve ever had a chance to taste Irish Soda bread. I can’t wait to see my daffodils and tulips blooming outside. Still hanging on to winter here although the days are generally warmer. I like your shamrock window deco! Wishing you a Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

  8. I love our bluebirds here, but I've never seen them at the feeders; suppose I need to try a suet feeder. We have had a sparrow hawk preying on our birds; perches in a tall tree overlooking the back yard where the feeders are and waits for an opportunity to strike. A couple of days ago, I saw him swoop down and, in a flash, he had one of the cardinals and was gone. Now, I am wondering if I shouldn't take down the feeders.

I love your hellebore! I need to learn more about them. I am definitely going to try the soda bread. Thanks!!

    1. Oh goodness, we have a hawk that lurks around here as well. As lovely as they are, they frighten me. They do send out a call that the smaller birds seem to listen and then scatter to the nearby shrubbery. Even the squirrels take cover.
Hellebores are wonderful additions to a perennial bed. I bought one plant and now have many that I have divided over the years. There are many beautiful colored ones. ♥

  11. Your soda bread looks wonderful and I'm going to try it. I'll make extra to take to my parents; I've been making and delivering meals to them since bringing Mom home from hospital. As for your cast iron pan...I just ordered a Ringer to clean my cast iron; it's supposed to be Wonderful. I surely hope so!

    1. Sandra, I think you and your parents will enjoy the soda bread. It is best right out of the oven or warmed before eating with a lot of butter! I hope your Mom is doing better. Never heard of a Ringer, I'll have to look that up! ♥

  13. Hmmm . . . so much to chat about here today, I'm not sure where to start!

So exciting to have a pair of bluebirds in your yard. We had a pair for several years at our old house and they were a joy to watch.

Your kitchen window makes me smile . . . so many cheery things, from your shamrock garland to your Beatrix Potter figurines!

My daughter usually makes Irish soda bread, but we didn't have a St. Paddy's Day dinner this year. Too many other things happening! Of course, I don't mind eating corned beef and cabbage on another day!

A visit from your daughter and a grandson's birthday! Sounds like lots of good times at your house!

  14. What beautiful little bluebirds! I so rarely see them here anymore. I love how you embraced St. Pat's with the decorating and all. Now I wonder if you had enough soda bread to toast it for breakfast...my favorite way to eat it.

    1. Vee, since our daughter has been visiting, I ended up baking another loaf so we would have enough. I must try toasting it. I've been reheating it in the microwave. Toasting it sounds better! Have a wonderful week. ♥

  17. I thought spring was well underway but it looks like snow tonight, last I heard anyway. I to love Irish soda bread. Cast iron skillet is wonderful for that. You made a fine loaf and I am thinking a big glob of butter to go on it.
Your yard with the daffodils look so nice and clean. Mine needs lots of work.
Happy Springtime? I am still hoping. I am ready now after the few days of tease of sunny weather.

  20. Your Irish soda bread looks fantastic! I love cooking with Grandpa's cast iron skillet. Even though we have snow and lots of it, I hung sheets outdoors yesterday. Love that fresh air. I noticed a couple days ago that I have clover growing in one of my aloe pots. It must have come in (as seeds) when I brought the plants in last fall!!

  21. Such happy days indeed! How exciting to see the blue birds! I have seen a few as well, but they haven't taken up residence yet in the birdhouses we've provided, I hope they do. What fun to be able to hang your sheets out already! It's not warm enough yet here to do that, I look forward to being able to do it soon though! Have a wonderful time celebrating with your family :)
