It's Finally Autumn

It's finally here, my favorite season, glorious Autumn.  The crisp cooler mornings make our walks more pleasant as we continue to enjoy all that Autumn brings by the river.  The butterflies are still lighting our patio with their lovely presence.

Soon October will be here and the flowers will fade with frost.  Plants that vacation in our basement for the winter will be brought inside.

"By all these lovely tokens September days are here, With summer's best of weather And autumn's best of cheer. "

Helen Hunt Jackson

The Autumn Crocus (Colchicum) have been blooming in the garden.

I really like to plant white flowers in the back of our yard.  The white begonia always lights up the dark areas.  I see we have a crack in this large pot.  I've had it for years and will miss its presence in my garden.  I save shards to fill other large pots in the Spring.  I also fill large pots with plastic pots that annuals come in so I don't have to use so much of my precious compost.  I use compost that we make in all of our pots.  My flowers love it.

Come inside with me and I'll show a few of my Autumn decorations.  Please use the side door, my friends.

I don't use a lot of orange in my Autumn decorations as our walls here are crimson.  I don't mind this wreath on this door on the inside because the orange is softened by the white door.

I put away my Old Britain Castle dishes and bring out Friendly Village for Autumn.  The cut glass piece belonged to my Mama and always stayed on her buffet.  I filled it with dried fruit and a battery operated candle.  It has a timer and comes on when it gets dark, which is by 7:30 these days.

This arrangement is in the living room on the coffee table.  It is also a battery operated candle.

Though not exactly Autumn florals, I have lilies from Lidl ($2.99) on the dining table.  Grayden buys these for me and we enjoy them so much when there are no blossoms from the garden.

I collect salt and pepper shakers and bring out the owls in Autumn.  We also enjoy real candles.

In the Florida Room on the sewing machine I placed some of my Jim Shore pieces.

I've had this Autumn floral arrangement forever as most of my decor fits that category!

Another battery operated candle that I placed a wreath around.

On the mantle in the Florida Room I just placed a Autumn wreath.

This has been a difficult time for all of us.  I hope you are coping well.  I must admit I've been feeling a bit sorry for myself.  Knowing that Autumn is upon us has renewed my spirit somewhat.  Take care of yourselves, my friends.💓

  1. Martha Ellen, your home is so lovely in its autumn dress! Your fall decorations work perfectly with your crimson walls (which I love). I love that you have had most of your decor for many years as that means that they are much-loved treasures with meaning attached to each one.

I hope that autumn continues to renew you. Yes, these have been difficult days, to say the least, and I am certain that we all have had days in which we have felt sorry for ourselves. I like this verse of Scripture to remind me of the source of true joy: "In Your presence is fullness of joy; at Your right hand are pleasures forevermore.

    1. Thank you so much for the kind comments, Cheryl. Indeed my decor has been collected over the years and it is like visiting old friends when they come out for Autumn.
I appreciate the scripture you shared with my heart today. When clouds come I need to lean on the One that strengthens me.

  2. Well you certainly can be forgiven for that...the feeling under it. I felt more under it when I didn't have a plan. Now that I do,I feel more in control. It's that not knowing and unable to control the circumstances that makes people antsy.

Your garden is lovely. My summer flowers made it past the frost threat and now have weeks to go before another one. I do like to keep them going as long as I can. I never put out the ivy or the Easter cactus so I don't have to worry where they'll be. My sister still has that magnificent geranium that I asked her to revive. I must show that soon because it really is very happy.

I like all your autumn decor. I really must get with it before autumn is coming to a close and I haven't done a thing. Happy Autumn to you 🍂

    1. Vee, it's so true when there are circumstances out of my control (and there are many) I feel the dark clouds covering my spirit.
I do hope to see the geranium that your sister nursed to happiness.
Thank you for your kind comments as always, my friend.

  3. I enjoyed seeing your garden as Autumn makes itself at home. And you have decorated your home beautifully for the season. I have a tableaux on the dining table but my big collection of decorations come out in October. Enjoy this lovely time. ((hugs)), Teresa :-)

  4. Tasteful and elegant Autumn decorations. I love your door wreath, that's something I need to work on for my door. How I wish we could have all the fun and all the glory of Autumn without the dark evenings and gloomy weather! Then again, it wouldn't be Autumn, would it? So many of your photos are worthy of being made into cards. Such a shame about your pot. I once turned a large, broken pot on it's side and made a succulent dome underneath.

    1. Deb, I placed this wreath on the inside of this door. The birds certainly love the one on the front and so do the spiders. My summer wreath has to take a vacation in my gardening shed. After cleaning out a wasp nest and other things I couldn't identify, I was afraid to bring it indoors.
I've got a couple of pots that made a perfect little door for fairies in my garden. I must take a photo of them. A succulent dome sounds perfect as well.
Have a wonderful evening all snug in your cottage, my friend. xoxo

  6. How pretty Martha Ellen, a lovely post. The background on your butterfly photo showed it to perfection. I love the shadows on the wall in your second photo, and I enjoyed Helen Hunt Jackson’s quote. Gorgeous flowers and pretty Fall displays! I feel quite Fall festive after looking at your post. Thank you my friend, and happy Autumn :)

  8. Your home is lovely, Martha Ellen, and I too love to have white flowers in my garden. They're the ones that show up with the tiniest bit of ambient light. I have 3 larger pots that I'll be using next year so I appreciate your tip on using discarded pots to fill them, rather than all potting soil! Have a wonderful day.

  10. Hi Martha- autumn is coming fast isn’t it! Time to snuggle in. Too bad about the cracked pot! There is something very summery about white flowers! It’s nice to have pieces of our mother’s. I’ve inherited some blue and white porcelain pieces from my moms collection. Makes me think of her when I look at them. I like the sewing machine with Jim Shore pieces!

  14. How pretty your home looks dressed for Autumn. Nice shot you took of the flowers on the outside brick wall with the shadows cast. I am going to try to over winter my two Mandeville's this year on the porch. The porch is jalousie but heated with a mini split when I need it. I hope they live. I noticed your plaid table cloth, I love plaid. Mom would always have plaid in the winter months as table cloths and other coverings. Crimson is beautiful on your walls. Love that color. Things are getting better, I just feel it. I enjoy being in the out doors more than inside, so it keeps my mind off of things. We take trips to mountains and get out to walk around, I look for rocks, always looking for rocks. I love them, my grand kids love painting them and my little grand daughter calls them gem stones. Back to nature is good for me these days especially. Take care and I enjoyed seeing your treasures you have decorated with. Betsy

  15. It was such a delight this morning to see all the Autumn treasures in your home, Martha Ellen. The glass piece that belonged to your Mom is so pretty with the white candle and orange pumpkin. Love those owl salt and pepper shakers too. Candles always seem to fill our home with a bit of glow and comfort, and Yankee candles are some of the best. The orange butterfly is beautiful, Martha Ellen, and it looks like it could be a post card. ; )

Enjoy these wonderful Autumn days, dear friend.

  17. Beautiful post, Martha! I love autumn, too, and your place looks so lovely. I really like white flowers in the garden, too, and really appreciate your tip about taking up some space in a large pot with those leftover smaller pots from the nursery. Also, I've become a huge fan of battery-operated candles because I can have them going in other parts of the house and not worry about them.

Eddie and I are going for walks keeping social distancing in mind, most others are too, although many friends have not found the same.

    Stay safe and well.
