Colonial Williamsburg Walks

We love taking long walks in Colonial Williamsburg.  There are benches if we wish to stop and rest or have a snack or people watch.  We park our car nearby and head to the Duke of Gloucester Street that travels from William and Mary down to the Capitol.  Franklin Delano Roosevelt called the Duke of Gloucester Street "the most historic avenue in all of America."

If you wish you can take a ride in a horse driven coach.  Grayden asked me if I wanted to do that this trip, but I told him that I would prefer walking if he didn't mind.  Maybe one day it would be fun.

The streets are closed to local traffic and it is a walker's paradise.

Colonial Williamsburg employs interpreters to bring history alive for guests.  They engage with guests in most interesting ways keeping in the period of the eighteenth century of colonial times.

The Coach and Livestock Department takes care of the animals that live and work in Colonial Williamsburg.  There are sheep, oxen, and horses that need pastures and attention.

I couldn't help snap a few of the trees that were turning colors.  My goodness, I do love Autumn!  How about you?

There are so many photos to share, but I will save more of them for later posts.  Thank you for stopping by!

  1. I was there in 2009 when my sons aircraft carrier came back from deployment. We drove there but didn’t have enough time. Plus he was tired. Beautiful photos. Just a really neat place that I’d love to stay in and explore for a few days! Thanks for sharing.

  2. My friend, what a wonderful way to celebrate your combined anniversary and birthdays. The colours of autumn are spectacular in that area, I fondly remember the drive both to and from colonial Williamsburg and Virginia Beach in the autumn when it was like driving along an orange tunnel!
I look forward to seeing you taking your carriage ride, sitting in the back and regally waving at the people you pass by.
I always found the interpreters incredibly helpful as you say; one in particular was very helpful in that he aided those of us with cameras trying to capture the explosion of the musket shots by lining us up and saying to click our cameras when he told us not necessarily when the guns fired because of the delay with sound on visual. I did get a perfect photo! xoxo

    1. It's lovely to hear of your memories of Autumn past, Deb. Maybe one day we will take a carriage ride. I had to laugh at me giving a regal wave while doing so!
I love it when the interpreters stay in character. I'll never forget the conversation years ago in Jamestown with our young daughter about "taking a picture" which the interpreter heard "pitcher." So funny the banter went that day. Glad to hear you were helped getting the perfect photo when you visited Williamsburg. xoxo

  3. I love this spot and haven't been in ages. The last time was when I was still working and PBS had a behind-the-scenes tour of Williamsburg where we met with one of the historians and an archaeologist. It was fascinating. (And still time to tour!) What a great trip for you two.

    1. Vee, maybe a carriage ride will be in both of our futures! Autumn foliage has been quite pretty here this year. I know it is in your area!

  5. What a wonderful walk you took here, Martha Ellen. I would love to visit this place, it's right up my alley. ; ) The horse and carriage ride looks fun. I once took a carriage ride in Old Sac, and it was a ride to remember. That white and black horse is beautiful. Have never seen one quite like it before. And the Fall leaves are bursting with color in this area. Even that little white house with the orange- framed windows looks like Autumn. So charming. You certainly have had some memorable moments of this special place that you love so much, Martha Ellen.

    1. Sheri, I know you would enjoy Colonial Williamsburg. This living museum feels like a breath of fresh air to me. It's charming all seasons of the year. I'm sure you enjoyed your carriage ride in Old Sac. I have been on hay rides with the grands and that is fun so I'm sure a carriage ride would be more grand!
